Seeking advice - 1965 Fender Bassman for bass???

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello, I'm selling a vintage 1965 Fender Bassman with it's original matching 2X12 Cabinet (Jensen C12N & Utah speakers). A local kid called me up asking to check out and possibly buy the amp. I told the kid my opinion which is it might not be the best amp for actually playing bass through. He says he is playing Beatles like rock and raggae so maybe it might work. Please give me your opinions on whether my amp would work for this kid and if he would be happy? I don't want to sell something to someone if it won't make them happy

If he wants low end the Bassman lacks the power and the speakers the ability to reproduce them. I owned one for a weekend and returned it as fast as I could.

It will make a guitar player very happy. Bass player, not so much.

They sound amazing and are great for recording. Live might be a challenge through that little 212 cab, but hook it up to an 810 or a 215 and they can get pretty loud for a 30 watter.

For Beatles type rock, it might work, passably.

For reggae... unless he likes a very different kind of tone than the usual range for that genre... it won't work. At all. Except maybe recording.

Great guitar amps; you could maybe get away w/ bass at low levels, but most kids are probably going to crank it??? LOL

Yeah, it wouldn't work for bass in any loud situations. A 50 watt Bassman is okay for practicing at home and some small gigs like at coffee shops or jazz clubs.

I blew a 2x15 bassman cab no problem in a garage, but was using an acoustic head that was probably way too powerful for it. Been playing through the head into some ampeg 4x10 now, but the head is realllly gritty sounding. There's enough volume pushing through the cab to get around 2 guitars and a loud drummer though, but I wouldn't trust the cab to be loud enough paired with the head, especially a 2x12.

If he's local, let him try it and decide for himself.
