Seeking Cabinet Advice

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all!

Long time lurker, first time poster.

After a brief 15 year hiatus from playing music, I'm getting back into it.

I've been utilizing talkbass for my used gear research and I scored a great deal on a Yorkville Bassmaster xs800. Now I need a 4x10 cabinet to go with it.

I've been playing through a friend's Eden 4x10 and I've gotten really spoiled by its sound. Love it, love it, love it! Sadly, I simply cannot afford the EX410N. I'm willing to spring a little extra for the EX410, but it's only rated at 400w. :/

The amp puts out 600w@8Ω/800w@4Ω/600w@2Ω, so whatever the cab is I want to make sure that it is well matched. My budget sucks so the top price that I am ready to spend is around $400.

I know this is already a familiar topic, and I'm a bit embarrassed about asking for help with this, but I'm kinda stumped.

Thanks for all of your advice.

Check your local craigslist, Kijiji, and the TB classifieds for some gear that's local to you. I've seen Mesa powerhouse 410 cabs sell for $450 in great condition, you just have to wait for a good deal to come by.

Where are you located? If your local to the Dayton Ohio area, I have a like new GK MBX 410 I'd let go for $325.

I'm in Oakland, CA, so that's a bit far for that cab to travel.

And, aren't the GK MBX 410 rated at only 400w, 8Ω? Theoretically I would need a 600w, 8Ω (or better) cabinet -- but please correct me if I am wrong.

The SWR Goliath II and III are my favorite 410s at any price & go for under $400 on craigslist all the time in Denver. I'd suspect it's the same in your neck of the woods.

I've used, and am currently using Carvin.

$349 for a 4x10 cab 800w/8ohms

Carvin.com :: BR410-8

or get one on ebay for $299

Carvin BR410-8C Bass Amp Speaker Cab Cabinet 8 Ohm New | eBay

I am in no way affiliated with Carvin. Just used their amps and cabs for years.

Don't worry about the wattage thing, it doesn't mean much. Most any cab will distort before it see's maybe 1/2 those numbers any. If it sounds like it's struggling/farting out just turn down the volume or the bass knob a bit. Your amp doesn't put out 600 watts unless it's turned up to the threshold of clipping on both the input and the output anyway.

+1 to will33's post. Forget cab wattage altogether, and focus on finding a cab that sounds good to you. Easy.

ORLY?!

I've been really concerned about this. I was actually ready to plop down for an Eden 400w, 8Ω cab the other day. The amp says 800w@4Ω, so I was really concerned. I absolutely love the sound, but I would hate to blow the thing up.

In the studio I'm running at about 5 gain, 6 volume, some compression and minor EQ tweaques. I'm pretty certain that I'm nowhere near hitting 400w. It would be nice to know for sure though. I have no idea what volumes I'll be needing once we start playing live yet.

Don't worry about it, just get something that gets the tone and volume you want. If you can't find that in one cab find one that gets you the sound you want a little quieter than you want it and buy 2 of them.
