Sellers Remorse

Sign in to disble this ad
Well I finally sold off my biggest oldest cabinet. It was a monster GK 4x12 folded horn with 2x10" drivers in the middle of the horn. It used to belong to various semi-well known East Bay metal-punk rock guys so it had a little history. I held on to it for the last few years but it honestly could not cut in a live band situation like my Mesa cabs do. It also couldnt handle the full power of my Mesa amp! As a home cabinet it was actually way too loud at the kind of frequencies that burrow through walls and bother housemates.
So for the last two years it's been on home theatre duty. Plugged into an adcom 535 it provided for the subwoofer freqs.
Having parted ways with the beast last night I am feeling some pangs of remorse. I think I may have to buy something with the proceeds to cheer me up. Maybe a good delay pedal or a used cabinet? Always wanted to get another 4x10" or a 2x12". Or maybe a YBA1a will pop up on CL.

Gear/human relationship rebound. It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all... or so they say. I say buy something that will sooth the pain!!

it's funny, I spent almost a decade tracking this cabinet down. I swa a friend playing it in a band, with guitar! I made him promise if he ever sold it hew would sell it to me. Well he quit the band later and joined an eastern orthodox monastery. The cab went through a few owners before I grabbed it. Then it just wasnt cutting the mustard. It was great in some badn formats just not the one I was in.

I've had a basement full of gear for exactly this reason.

I finally had to break the logjam and let a few things go, or risk following Tombowlus down a path that my budget could not support. In my case it proved to be just like any other addiction... (eg. tobacco ). Once I set my mind to it, it actually proved to be far easier than I expected. I just follow my personal rule which is that money derived from the sale of bass gear can only be spent on more bass gear.

I'm sorry, nothign for sale here, I sold it last night. Wishing I hadn't due to sentimental attachment.

I also find it difficult to sell gear. I’ve rationalized to myself every excuse in the book, including “I know I’ll never use it again, but maybe someone I know will need to borrow it someday”, haha.

I finally put a guitar, two basses and a cab on CL, and sold two of the items, but it turned out kinda cool, ‘cause they both went to young kids who seemed to really appreciate it, and that’s better than stuff just sitting in a back room.

yeah it turned out that way as well.
Kid that bought my cab had a 66 bassman that his great uncle bought new in 66. Sounded awesome through my cab!
He and his bandmate were very stoked to have the heavy beast.

I should not have traded in my Avatar cab.

I still have one, but lately I've been building a rig for the practice space and my two dear sweet Avatars would have taken care of the cab problem completely. As it stands, a year after getting hosed on the cab trade-in I was buying another, inferior cab from the same place. Crap. I could've put that money into a decent practice space head, instead of the abomination I'm running now.

Seller's remorse ftl.

I sometimes have a hard time letting things go as well, although I have been much better at it lately. I pretty much have everything I will ever need with the exception of a large speaker cab (which I will likely never need unless I get a big gig).

Last summer I sold my old Fender 2x15 cab that I'd had since 1967. I took the good JBL speaker out of it and left the other (buzzing) speaker in it. I'm not sad to see that old, heavy, cumbersome beast go.

Now I'm using Genz-Benz lightweight gear and VERY happy to have made the change.
