Selling a blown speaker?

Sign in to disble this ad
This seems like a dumb question, but are blown speakers worth anything? Is there a type of recycling market for the magnets? I know you can sell off old aluminum, copper, and other metals for some cash at junk yards, wanted to know if speakers were kind of the same way.

If it is a desirable model speaker (EV, JBL, Eminence, Gauss, etc.) there is a market for the used baskets.

People that do reconing will buy them to repair and re-sell, as will someone looking for that model speaker (and they will have it reconed).

Lower end/generic speakers probably not.

They worth much of anything as far as recycled magents etc. Some specific models maybe bring a few bucks in blown condition if somebody thinks they can pick up yours and get it reconed for a little less than a new one or if it's some special speaker that isn't available new anymore. This might be something like an EV15L, some old Jensen guitar speakers or something like a Peavey black widow where someone may figure if they can throw you a 20 for you old one, spend 89 on a replacement basket and still be 30-40 bucks ahead of buying one new. Pretty narrow market though. At best, you might get $20 out of some vintage guitar guy if you happen to have just what he's looking for.

As far as getting more use out of them after they're blown. You can cut a magnet off and put it on a stick or take a few of them and slide them on a rod to make like a magnetic wheel thing you can drag around your driveway or garage floor to pick up nails, screws, metal shavings, etc......Or anything else you can think of where a magnet would come in handy. If you work on your own car, they can help you keep from losing nuts and bolts.

Gotchya. I've got a GK 10" for the SBX series that's got a torn cone, just wondering if I could make some money back on it.

nope, don't think so, bro. however, a torn cone isn't the end of the world. you'd be surprised how well a torn cone can sound if you put it back together with some rubber cement. i've even seen people repair them with duct tape and they sound fine.

Hi.

No real money in generic blown speakers.

You'll get the normal rate for iron though, a few cents/kg.

The magnet has several re-uses, and will33 covered one of the best.

If You detach the magnet, a follower of Hamel may take the opportunity to turn it into a free-energy device.
Or at least try .

Regards
Sam

Try gluing it back together, or if it's a long cut, try something like flexible silicone glue. You don't want one side to be much stiffer/heavier than the other or it'll throw the balance off, mess with the voice coil alignment, etc. Although I have pulled off a couple "well, it's better than nothing" repairs and they still work.

Well, I doubt there is a market in it...I put up an ad in classifieds selling four PAS 10's from a Goliath II for $10 each, that seem to be blown. The cones are good, but they put out a very distorted and low-bass signal (voice coil shot?)
No one wants them. I emailed a few speaker and music shops to see if they want them for re-coning/reselling....nope, not worth it.
But I still have them...fighting the urge to toss them in the trash...
