Shallow or Deep rack for cooling ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have 2 choices of 3u rackcase , one has my amp out the back about 20mm [ shallow ] , the other standard case has about 4 inches from the back of the amp to the ends , my amp is fan cooled 2u and I have a real shallow 1u tuner on top , any probs or bad experiences cooling wise with amps being too far back in the case ? , theres still plenty of space around it but not really open to the atmosphere . The larger case would be handy to leave all the leads plugged in etc . Thanks .

I had a deep Gator fiberglass case for my TubeWorks head, and I think that it stayed cooler than my current snug gig bag. I don't know how much the enclosure's material has to do with it. I left my speaker cables connected inside the enclosure, and only had to grab the power cord. Made life easy.
I liked the Gator, but it had a weird resonant noise that forced me to dump it. As far as I could tell, it was entirely attributed to how the cooling air traveled within the case.

Cooling will be fine as long as there's room for airflow around the amps vents. It doesn't actually have to be open to the atmosphere. A rack is also for protection during transport. If the amp is hanging out the back, it isn't really being protected.
