Should I connect same brand cabinets or not?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking to purchase a custom 1-15" cabinet at 200 watts RMS (400 peak), 8 ohm, and match it up with a Eden 4-10 cabinet. Both cabs are 8 ohm and will hook up to my Ampeg B2RE at 450 watts 4 ohms. I can't find an affordable 15" Eden. The 4x10 I bought used at a great price. I've read about trying to match brands. Is this or isn't this important. I'm trying to save money.

Thanks,

Thanks,
No. Match brands AND cab type. I’m not sure your goal in pairing a 115 with a 4x10, but most people do it because they think they’ll get more lows, which is a myth. By pairing non-similar speakers, you’re opening yourself to a variety of potential sound problems that using two of the same cabs negates. Along with this, using a 15 with a 410 you open yourself to a much higher chance of damaging the 15. Most people but that 15 down under the 10’s, where it’s harder to hear. Almost ALL 4x10’s are more efficient than 115’s, so you’ll be hearing those 10’s and masking any warning signs of over excursion. Speaking of over excursion, the 10’s each will get 1/8th of your wattage from your amp. Your single fifteen will get half the wattage…bad mojo.

Yeah, if you're going different sizes, then different brands isn't gonna do any more harm than you already will really. =P The only time multiple size drivers are useful are if you are using crossovers. Separate frequency ranges going to each cab. So you'd have your lows, mids and highs going to different places. But that's really where PA comes in. In your bass amp, the most you'll get is a bi-amp to separate the high frequencies to keep them clean. So go for same cabs by same manufacturer.

+1 stay away from the 410/15 trap. It's popular, but so is alot of stuff that doesn't make sense.

Like 'Reality TV'. Or political debates. Or soccer.
