I am thinking of getting a Carvin bx 500. I have an 8 ohms 2 10 rated at 350 watts. Should I add a 8 ohms 4 10 to make it a 6 10 stack or should I buy a 4 ohms 4 10 and just use the 2 10 for practice and small gigs and the 4 ohms for bigger venues ?

I'd either get an identical 210, and stack it to make it 4 tall. Or just get the 4 ohm 410...

If you get the 4x10 in 4Ω you would be able to run the 8Ω 2x10 for practice, the 4Ω 4x10 for gigs and both to make a 2.67Ω 6x10. The amp would need to be switched to the 2Ω position to run both cabinets.

Otherwise an identical pair of 2x10s in a vertical stack makes a versatile rig. You can just see my pair of Acme B2 in my avatar.

What he said ^^^. Quite honestly you'll likely never need more than the 410 with that head and for many small gigs, the 210 will suffice.

I'm glad you agree.

Even for a small gig I'd still use the 4x10 or pair of 2x10s. I wouldn't risk a single 2x10 at a gig.

I would get the 4 ohm 4x10. This would give you the option of running the 2x10 alone, 4x10 alone or combined 6x10. That should cover just about any situation! I used a BX500 for several gigs with a 8 ohm and 4 ohm cabinet combined to 2.67 ohms. It worked great!
