Should I trade my ampeg 810 for two fender cabs?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to get rid of my ampeg 810e so I can get a 4x10 and a 1x15 cab. Im sick of transporting it so I figured that would be my best option.

I know someone thats in a melodic hardcore band that has 2 fender cabs and would be willing to trade. Im not sure what models they are but I have a picture. I plan on seeing his band tonight to hear the cabs, but can anyone tell me what models these are, how they sound and if you think it would a fair trade?

Thanks

I don't think I would for one. Besides a 4x10 plus 1x15 is a horrible pairing IMO.

a 410 is about twice as loud as a 115, and introduces the possibility of phasing issues that can have a detrimental effect on your tone. i know a lot of people use a rig like that and like it, but i've never played a single 410/115 rig and liked it. if the phasing didn't bother me, the volume imbalance did.

I have owned and regularly gigged both an Ampeg 810 and a Fender 115/410 stack (not the more recent version). While the Fender stack was good value I do not think it came anywhere close to the Ampeg 810 for grunt, wallop and sheer playing enjoyment. With the Fender there was always the sense of a "limit" beyond which you could not go, whereas the Ampeg gave no hint of that. I remember at the time feeling that this came from the 115 cab more than the 410. I wouldn't do the trade - I currently own a Bergantino NV610 which IMO beats them both hands down and is easy to schlep. Hope this helps, just my .02.

i would not the 810 also has wheels and is actually easer to transport the others do not + i think if you listened to the tone you may also want to keep the 810

One great cab with a dolly attached for two back breakers? Careful what you wish for...

Those are the newer bassman cabs. As far as I know, the power handling on them is a bit lower, even combined, than what you would get with your ampeg cab, so depending on your head, that could be problematic in and of itself.

In my experience a 1x15 makes an expensive stand for a 4x10. But hey, some folks like it. A better pair IMO/IME is a 1x15 and 2x10 stack. But still, two 4x10's will leave it for dead.
2 15's is another story....
Better all around to stay with the 8x10, IMO.

You've said you're sick of transporting 810. Can't say for the tone cause I have no experiences but moving two cabs is more difficult although they are smaller.
What about some 610? They're smaller/lighter and come close to Ampeg's 810.

The only way round the problems is to have two amps with separate EQ each amp idealized for each speakers performance.
I don't think the theoretical micro phase issue is a problem with this old Eden/Ampeg pairing:
