Shuttle 6.0 settings question.

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought a Shuttle 6.0, but it's not sounding how I expected it to.

I'm using it with a couple of Acme B1's. I was expecting it to sound warm and valvey, instead it sounds very aggressive and not really what I want.

I have the Valve pre set with the 'gain' on 7 and the 'volume' on full. I have the 'master volume' turned down low for home practising. I've left the EQ section pretty much flat, except for a the 'bass' which is on 2.

Have I set the pre section wrong ?

I've read all through the Shuttle 6 thread and got quite confused with all the things being said.

Try boosting the lowest mids (8-9:00) or cut the highest mids (2k). I usually like the tube gain between 12:00 and 3:00.

Definately cut the high mids or boost the low mids a bit. Run the gain a few clicks back from where the clip light flashes on hardest notes. The 6.0 is a pretty "hi-fi" head but you should be able to warm it up to your liking as the eq is very flexible.

I usually use the low filter pass to give more low end warmth and then boost the mids a tad between 8 - 10 o'clock and a two or three clicks.

Open it up!

The cavalry (G-B staff) will be here soon, so amuse yourself with us various Genz lover's advice.
Mine?
Boost the pre Gain until it lights the Input O/L lamp and then back off just a hair.

Good gawd, I just had my pre-gain set at 3 o'clock and even at low pre "volume" and Master Volume setting I thought the SVT trademark lawyers were going to show up and haul me away.

You'll be able to dial it in. And, don't baby the pre - you can let it run full out since the Shuttle is indestructible.

Depending on the bass, it can get pretty grindy at 3:00. By cutting the high mids and boosting the bass control it goes from buzzy to warm. The high pass filter (bass boost button) I leave off unless I am using a small cabinet or playing low volumes. Of course YMMV.

I'll also vote for cutting the high mids. More tube is always going to add grind in this range, IMO, and make the head sound more aggressive, not necessarily more "valvey" (if I understand the tone you're refering to with that term).

it will suck the high mids. Then, with the semi-para mid controls, you're putting low mids in. This makes it very, very punchy.

Quick question...

in the below recommendations, where do you set the gain and volume?

I set everything at noon (including gain and volume), forget the tone shaping buttons, adjust the master to what I want and with my P-bass it's about perfect in the mix and for recording. A little more bite or a little more warmth....I can adjust that with my tone knob on the bass.

Thanks "hasbeen" for the eq settings. Very nice. As a newbe gives me a little confidence in what some "pros" people use and to go from there. Going to Raleigh, NC Feb 17 for Genz Benz demo.

You're welcome. Speaking of pros- that's the setting that Doug Johns and Ed Friedland use too....except they don't engage the mid scoop button.

Hi off
I recently acquired a Shuttle 6.0 and I'll be trying that out. Incidentally, the Shuttle is also the best headphone amp I've ever used.

I use it as a headphone amp too. My wife prefers it.
