Signal Chain Question...Don't want to hurt my amp!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello TB,

I have a signal chain question. After looking through many threads on using a DI box out of a speaker output (mostly the Orange AD200 threads) I still have a few questions.

I have a Reeves 225 Head and 1x15 matching cab. I also have a Radial JDI DI box. If I run one of my speaker outs to the cab, and one to the DI box into an XLR would there be any chance I’d damage my amp, or that the impedance would change (the cab is 8 ohms and the head is switchable)? Or should I just run one speaker out into the DI and use the DI to split the signal to my cab and a XLR? What would be the advantages or disadvantages to either chain? I really don’t want to damage my amp so just want to make sure my thinking is correct.

Thanks TB!

If the outputs are in parallel, and the impedance is set by the switch, then you should be ok running separate connections to the cab and the DI box (I know I've heard of people setting it up this way), but really, if you have to run two cables anyways, why not just set it up using the IN/OUT jacks on the DI box?

There are some amps that use the jacks to swap transformer windings (plugging into a second jack would trip alternate winding such as on vintage ampegs), but I don't think the Reeves is set up this way so you should be ok.

Why not use the DI on the Reeves????

I want to get a post power amp signal into the PA. So if I can't mic the cab, I can still use the amp to shape my tone.

One speaker out to the cab, one to the DI. Make sure you engage the "15dB PAD" AND the "SPEAKER" pad on the DI. The Radial JDI has high impedence and thus won't interfere with the amp and cab. Basically, the impedence "seen" by the amp remains the same and the power to the cab remains the same.

Just run your DI in-line between the amp and speaker cab. When I had my Mesa 400+ I did that. I have a JDI as well.
I think all you need to do is hit the -15db Pad and the Speaker buttons and make sure they're depressed/pressed in. Sounded way better than the DI off the transformer from the amp.

On the C225 I have the DI is after the power amp; it comes off of the OT. I know that was an important feature in the original design spec, and I don't think they changed them.
You might want to give them a call before you waste a lot of effort!
