Simple question re. Amp & Cab

Sign in to disble this ad
This may sound really stupid but, I have a Peavey Firebass 700 bass head and was thinking of pairing it with:
Ampeg B-410HE 4 x 10 Bass Cab
Ampeg B-Series 1x15 Bass Cab

as i have been offered them at a good price.
My worry is that, is the head too powerful.

The cabs are rated at 200W at 8 ohms and my head runs at 275W at 8 ohms.

I'm guessing it would run 137.5W into each cab making them perfect.

Am I right or I would i blow these cabs?

Thanks

If you run them both, then you will present a 4 ohm load on the amp, so power output goes up on the 700. Check the output at 4ohm.
You will split that power in half to each cab. The 1x15 will be getting 1/2 the power of the amp, and the other half will be split between the 4 speakers in the 4x10. The 1x15 will probably run out of steam first.
Most people on here do not recomment running a 4x10 and 1x15 together...The 4x10 will probably put out more volume than the 1x15. Good thing is each cab is a nice stand alone cab, so if it doesn't work out, just take one if it's loud enough.

Does your amp have a volume control? If it does use it to turn the amp down if the speakers distort.

For good reason. Most 1x15s won't keep up with most 4x10s. If one 4x10 isn't enough add another 4x10.

So the head runs at 475W at 4 ohms.
Was thinking of a 1x15 to get extra bottom end that i have found missing in the 4x10 i have used

This is a "can of worms" subject here.

4x10's can get as low, if not lower, than a single 15. Speaker technology these days allow 10's to handle all the lows you could ever need.

Most 4x10s go just as low as most 1x15s and they go louder to boot. There are exceptions, but few. I doubt if this combination is one of them.

+1 there are many tales floating about, disguised as amplifier fact. One of the biggest is that bigger speakers, like 15's and 18's, produce more "low end", and conversely, smaller speakers, like 10's, are what you use for tight, "punchy" upper end. As has already been said, this is totally untrue. The only real fact is, that pairing a single 15 with a cab that has 4x the number of speakers in it, is not a good pairing at all. The 15 will have had "enough", and start to choke, long before the 410 will. So, that rig will be limited to the capabilities of the 15" cab. Having 2 4x10's gives you all the low end and volume you'd ever want, and they'd also be balanced, power-wise.
