Single 15 or 4x8 cab for low end

LDS 4x8 for sale used so not having much experience with 8's which would have better low end. I assume the 8's would be tighter. Any info is welcome.

Driver diameter has little to do with how low a cab goes. That said it DOES depend on the particular speakers, and the tuning of the cab around it. You would need a fair bit more information on the cab to make that kind of decision.

4 8's will have about a 1/3 more cone area than a single 15, but will probably have about half the excursion, and probably lower sensitivity as well. So the 15 will probably be louder, and almost certainly lower. Depending on the cabs you are looking at, maybe lighter as well.

And no the 8s will not necessarily be "tighter". If you believe that myth then clearly you have never heard an EVM 15B.

It really depends on what kind of sound you are going for and the individual characteristics of the 2 cabs.

Having said that, I might go with the 4x8 if you like the sound of it, just because it's a little different.

The drivers are eminence acoutinators (sp)
Cab size is approx 20x20x16. Some type of horn is in cab. I'm not looking for an engineering techno response. There has been quite a few topics on LDS 8" cabs. Looking for a general consensus on the topic I posted.

This is a 600 watt cab. The cone surface is greater than a 15 but again I'm looking for a general opinion. Don said this cab could be used as a Stan alone cab and puts out good low end.

The speakers will have about 800 cc's of displacement. Not shabby. This cab will spank an ampeg 410e.

Don is a good guy. If you talked to him, you can pretty well believe what he told you.

I have three LDS cabs with Faital long throw 8" drivers.
One 4x8+horn, one 2x8+horn, one 2x8+5"mid.

They put out way beyond what you'd expect, looking at them.

I still have all those LDS cabs; they really do sound great.
I have none of the rest of anything pictured there.

FWIW; those are -heavy- cabs.
that 4x8 weigh probably 20lbs more than the Epi 410.
I seldom use those anymore, for just that reason.

I have a couple sets of much lighter stuff I use, and these sit down in my rehearsal space.

The 4x8 I'm looking at is made from South American ply weighs about 35lbs. According to the owner. The drivers are not long throws. Neo's I think. So I wonder how that would effect the low end?

At one point, Don had long throw neos.

You need to ask Don these questions.
Call him, with the serial number.

Just as a point of reference: I've got a PJB Suitcase combo, which has a ported 4x5" cabinet. Even with the tiny speakers, the bass is very deep and very controlled. When I add another 4x5" extension cabinet, the bass extension is shocking (even with a 5-string).

However, it never gets thunderously loud. I'm sure that if you put the same 300 watts into a pair of 15" Bag End cabs it would be loud enough to shake the walls.

So, in my experience, what you give up with multiple low-excursion woofers seems to be volume. All the bass is there, but it doesn't slam you in the guts.

I did and he said as I mentioned.
Good stand alone.
Just looking for opinions from people who have 8" cabs.

No offense intended, but, that's a very general question.

Unless you find someone with the same drivers, in the same cab, tuned and crossed over the same way, you're not going to get any terribly useful answers. IMO.

I used to have an SWR Henry Junior, which was a 4x8; and it sucked.

On the other hand, the LDS 4x8 I have is a great piece of work.

Interesting. The Bag Ends have no real low end. Very mid bass sounding 15. Thanks.

I have a line on another LDS 2x8 3 way with long throw 8" drivers.
Do the long throws put out that much more low end than the Acoustinators mentioned?
Which are not long throws.
The volume thing mentioned is a concern. What context of use are people who own the 2x8 long throws using them in? Jazz, rock, fusion, pop?

What brand.
