Small issue with Shuttle 3.0 and my 2010 MIA P-bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guys,

So I've been posting a lot of love for my Shuttle 3.0-10T combo lately and others share the love. However I have experienced one small problem with either it or my 5 month old 2010 Fender Am. Standard P-bass. That problem is either the P-bass has a weak output or the sensitivity on input of the Shuttle 3.0 is just to high. The end result is I end up turning the input gain on the amp all the way up as well as the output volume to be heard OI I used it for Wednesday night acoustic coffee house gig for the third time the other day it's an issue. It's loud enough for me but it I needed more it's not there.

My other amp which is not a GB has enough adjustment on the input side that this is not an issue. On that amp I do have to adjust the input higher than I would for my Stingray but I would expect that as the Stingray is active and the P-bass passive.

Anybody else seen this?

sure. your basses have vastly different output levels and you've got a tiny cab. either use a buffer pedal in front of the preicision or sell it and get something else. or add a second 110.

The buffer pedal approach has been my thought as well. Perhaps a Sadowksy pre (always wanted an excuse to try one) or something along those lines. It does strike me as odd though that the preamp would be designed in a way that it cannot be driven by something as extremely common as a p-bass. If I did not have another amp made by somebody else I'd probably be looking more at the bass itself. Hoping somebody from GB might chime in.

i've played the shuttle 3.0 with an american precision before and it drove it fine for my tastes. it, however, didn't get distorted even with the gain cranked, so maybe you're right.

+1 to both using a buffer, (many choices), AND to adding a 2nd cab. A 1x10 will only get you so far, whatever bass you play.

I had just a minute at lunch time to plug my 1972 Jazz into my 3.0-10t, and granted I was in my house but it got very loud with the preamp and master volume at 12:00. I couldn't take the time to A/B with one of my active basses, but I don't see a problem using the passive Jazz with the 3.0 from an input sensitivity/volume perspective. And of course, +1 to adding a second cab if you need more volume.

Thanks. I have had this amp on gig with both my Stingray and my P-bass and I think it's simply the p-bass does not have a hot enough output.

And yea always plenty loud at home for me too. Not really interested in a 2nd cab if I can avoid it. I've got "bigger" covered with my other rig. Looks like some type of line driver will be useful.

I think the Shuttles do great with active basses and hot output passive basses. I recall being able to max the Gain on the Shuttle 3.0 I used to own (traded it for a bass) using my, then, passive JO5 going into a 2x10 or 1x12.

I have the Shuttle 3.0-8 and with my American Series P I get plenty of volume and projection with the gain around one o'clock and the master between noon and two o'clock. Anything much beyond that takes the amp into clipping, particularly with more aggressive playing. With a Jazz I can take both gain and master a bit further.

So, my problem is really quite the opposite, the P comes on a bit too strong, although the tiny 1-8 cab is incredibly punchy and robust for what it is.
