Small rigs that sound like an SVT

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been lugging around heavy gear for 32 years and I'm getting tired of it quite frankly. I currently use a 73' SVT and a fridge. I dig the tone, but at the end of the night when I get home, I have to carry it inside and that just blows. Is there a smaller rig that will give me a close to an SVT tone, but weighs much less? We always have PA support by the way, and I don't like the mini SVT. It dosen't have enough balls IMO.

True dat.

Or... a B15N?

JimmyM will chime in here in a minute and preach the merits of B15N all over you.

And... when he does.. let me take that '73 with 32 years of hard-rock mojo off your hands.

(Or you could rock a V4B and and a modern sealed 4x10 (SWR or Avatar) into the PA.)

Man, after checking the Previously owned gear list I get the feeling you not gonna be satisfied with anything but a for real SVT. Have you considered getting a Berg NV610 instead of lugging yer fridge? I own one of each and know you'll find the NV way easier to tote, plus you'll probably prefer its tone to boot.

Well, I may be considering sellling some of my gear for something much lighter, but I still obviously want it to kick azz. Oh I bought the 73' off a bro on here a few months ago.

Oh snap... the "cab vs. the head" are two totally different discussions.

The Berg 6x10 would probably be mighty for sure.

But depending upon how fast you play, and how much definition you need, two lightweight 1x15s might be the answer.

I've rocked a '70s SVT into two 1x15s (EV TL606s or Mesa Diesel's) for 14 years.

The 8x10 gives you lots more definition, but the ported 1x15s put out oceans of low end... and a bit of fuzz to boot.

(Srsly, though... sell me your '73 SVT head. I'll build an altar of fuzz for it.)

You're kidding, right?

There's no way you can get anything "close to an SVT tone" without the weight . . . IMHO, YMMV, etc . . . . . .

Although JimmyM and others DO seem to like the VT bass pedal . . .

VT Bass will get you a good chunk of the sound, just not much of the feel. Fine by me. I use it as a grit pedal/preamp for pretty much everything I play through in my rock bands.

+1. exactly what i was going to say in reply to deaf pea. ultimately, i still carry an svt or b-15 most of the time because size still matters and so do tubes. but if you just can't hack the weight anymore and you have good pa, the vt is a darn good compromise.

Line 6 lowdowns in rock mode... or so they say. Anyway, it doesn't get smaller than one of those 110 combos

So "the vt is a darn good compromise" . . . I thought that you liked it MORE than just "a darn good compromise" . . . . . .

I love the VT Bass pro, it is not as good as my 4pro, but works great at practice or when I do not want to move my good head

That or a Bass Driver from Sansamp. Haven't tried the VT pedal so that may be a better match.

The pedals weigh less than 5 lbs and can drive a PA directly BTW
