Smallest combo loud enough for small band practice, that handles the low B...

Sign in to disble this ad
What choice would I get for the smallest combo that would be loud enough for a trio at practice volume, that handles the low B of a powerfull bass (G&L L-2500) and that wouldn't cost more then 600$ new (I know I'd have good deals used, but for the purpose of that thread, let's keep it for new gear)?

I'd say probably one of the new GK micro combos, even though I'm not a huge fan of them. Markbass would probably be the best, but well above your $600 mark.

Markbass Minimark, 2x6" combo, handles the low B. Don't know what the cost is other there though.

GK MB212, the last combo amp you might ever need for a rock band. I played an outdoor festival with it, no backline support, and it worked like a champ with a loud band and a few hundred people in the audience. these things are crazy loud and powerful and articulate.

Compact B happy combos

I think that low B is only 33 htz which is too low for most 10" speakers to reproduce very well, but most 12's and bigger should be OK.

My little Crate BT1000 kickback with a 12 does fine on the low B. Not made any more but you may come across a used one for 150US or so.

You are asking for small, cheap, loud and low.......good luck. I suggest you prioritize these. For example, if you compromise on size, a Peavey 15 inch combo will be a boat anchor, but will be more than loud and low enough and will easily fit your budget.

My guess is 32hz for that low B string.

I don't think any bass guitar speakers can faithfully reproduce the low B string.

Anyway, GK MB combos are great. But, why a combo? With $600 you can get something like a GK MB200 head and a high quality 1x12, 2x10 or 1x15 cab.

GK MB 212 will fit your budget. If it was me I'd save up a little longer and pick up a MarkBass Jeff Berlin combo, it's a 115 that handles lows dangerously good. It's also crazy light.

Based on what I paid for mine last January, and considering Mesa's recent price hike, I'd guess that'd be more than $600. It's the killer amp. In this case, you get everything you pay for.

I also have a Genz-Benz 3.0-10T with another 10" that is light and sounds really tight on the bottom, but it cost me $1200.

And then there's the Fender Bassman 400 2-10 I got used for $400, but it weighs 80 lb.

Like the man said, "cheap, light, loud: pick any two."

Yes they can, with the right speaker and the right cabinet design. But more often than not, it's the second harmonic of the low B (62Hz) that is what typically is reproduced at volume and many cabs can handle that, and do, with relative ease.

How loud he wants to be and what kind of tone he is after is subject to playing through as many as he can to find out for himself. Many of the above choices should do the trick.

maybe I don't know *** i'm talking about, but I just don't see how a 2x6 can handle the B and both be loud enough to cut through at a small show volume even..

+1.

I would strongly consider a used Markbass CMD 102P. It thumps on the low B and cuts through a loud band on small-medium gigs.

I used a 2x8 last night to play blues, funk, classic rock, and outright nasty jams with some guys. It took my Carvin's B on any pickup configuration with my GK 1001RB running a flat EQ. It's nearly twice as much cone area as a 2x6 but I didn't push it to it's limit either.
