What choice would I get for the smallest combo that would be loud enough for a trio at practice volume, that handles the low B of a powerfull bass (G&L L-2500) and that wouldn't cost more then 600$ new (I know I'd have good deals used, but for the purpose of that thread, let's keep it for new gear)? |

| | | | GK MB212, the last combo amp you might ever need for a rock band. I played an outdoor festival with it, no backline support, and it worked like a champ with a loud band and a few hundred people in the audience. these things are crazy loud and powerful and articulate. |

My little Crate BT1000 kickback with a 12 does fine on the low B. Not made any more but you may come across a used one for 150US or so.

For example, if you compromise on size, a Peavey 15 inch combo will be a boat anchor, but will be more than loud and low enough and will easily fit your budget.

My guess is 32hz for that low B string.

Anyway, GK MB combos are great. But, why a combo? With $600 you can get something like a GK MB200 head and a high quality 1x12, 2x10 or 1x15 cab.

I also have a Genz-Benz 3.0-10T with another 10" that is light and sounds really tight on the bottom, but it cost me $1200.
And then there's the Fender Bassman 400 2-10 I got used for $400, but it weighs 80 lb.
Like the man said, "cheap, light, loud: pick any two."

But more often than not, it's the second harmonic of the low B (62Hz) that is what typically is reproduced at volume and many cabs can handle that, and do, with relative ease.
How loud he wants to be and what kind of tone he is after is subject to playing through as many as he can to find out for himself. Many of the above choices should do the trick.

sorry. | +1.
I would strongly consider a used Markbass CMD 102P. It thumps on the low B and cuts through a loud band on small-medium gigs.

It took my Carvin's B on any pickup configuration with my GK 1001RB running a flat EQ. It's nearly twice as much cone area as a 2x6 but I didn't push it to it's limit either. |
