Smallish cab that sounds like a fridge

Sign in to disble this ad
In a recent trade, I got a SVT-CL in great condition.

Hooked it up to my Berg HS410, and sounded quite good, but not the magic of the 810 fridge.

Now I'm not even sure I'm gonna keep the SVT-CL. It does sound great, my best amp, but I have lots of Markbass gear that sounds very good too, and In the mix, on stage, sound as good as the SVT.

If I keep it, I'm gonna need a cab that can do the Fridge sound and feel, but I don't want to go back to huge gear. I've gigged the head once, and was not trilled to carry it around (compared to my LM2, F1, etc...)

So, suggestions on a Fridge clone, but way smaller.

Thanks

Part of the magic of any 'big cab' setup is the fact that it's big...while you can capture the tone profile in a smaller cab, you're never going to get the magic of a wall of moving air.

It's not as much being big as it is being tall. A pair of sealed 2x10s vertically stacked would come close, and they would have better dispersion.

What BurningSkies said is true..this debate continues as a new age of technology emerges...the smaller and lighter newer gear lack the 'whomp' factor of the bigger, heavier, and older technology...a younger generation will grow up with the subway portable gear and never consider the big boy, back breaking Ampeg line.

+1...

I'm running two, 210 cabinets stacked as a vertical 410 powered by a 500 watt micro head that is LOUD and full.

Is it as big and loud as the two Ampeg 810 cabs I used to drag around "way back when"...No sir's, it's realistically not,
but as Billf said, it's a close substitute.

Kinda figured there would be no easy ''this mini cab'' answer, but I sure was hoping.

Some will, as they see em as backlines on tv, like many generations before...

What you call magic is some sort of tone that simply won't happen with any ported cab like the HS410.

So, the typical "fridge sound" is partically determined by the vertical beaming(line array) and not by the width (baffle step) of the cabinet. One other important part IMO is that the fridge is a closed cab with a relative high Q and Fs.

You mean, Ampeg's 6x10? That cab has a VERY different voice compared to their 8x10.

Bergantino's 6x10 sounds a lot closer (better actually) to the original fridge. Also, any good sealed 4x10 will be a closer match than Ampeg's 6x10, which is a ported cab...

I'll stand corrected, A sealed 610.

How about a pair of 210AV cabs stacked one on top of the other? I've seen quite a few of these configs, on TalkBass, with the Micro VR head...

The trouble with that is that many people have reported problems when running the Micro VR into two 210AV cabs.....

I've seen/read that too, but it seems to be an amp issue. He's going to use an SVT-CL instead...

The new SVT210AV cabs rock, but yeah I wouldn't buy the head. One of them kicked the bucket while I was checking it out in the store.

The sound is very close to the fridge, not as much low lows, but the fridge cabs never really had low lows either.

NV610 is easily the best replacement for a fridge IMO but even though it's much lighter and a good bit smaller it ain't a "smallish" cab.
Never tried the SVT210AV but it seems like a good suggestion, only downside is having to haul around two cabs.
Reeves also makes a sealed 410, perhaps that would come close as well.
I would very much like somebody to market a tall and narrow staggered driver sealed 410!

I don't know of any companies that makes a sealed 2x10 or 2x12 for bass... anyone?

I've thought about the ampeg svt210av, but they are not sealed and are only rated for 200 watts... i'm worried about blowing them.

Use an ampeg SVT210AV on an amp stand to get it higher
