So...going with big cabs and small speakers!

To follow up on my thread regarding listening through 810s and 215s, I've decided to get another cab with a bit more clarity. This is to be paired w/ a VR (which I traded my Scout against). Hopefully I can trade some existing gear against this upcoming cab, god knows I got too much gear! Hope this is the last GAS attack!

Candidates are:
SWR Megoliath
SWR Henry the Eights!
Berg NV610
New Ampeg 810AV
Old Flatback Ampeg 810 and restore it (what's a reasonable price for these? How much are tolex and grill cloth for a complete overhaul?)
Any Others?

I've heard the last ones in the US were bad due to the use of particle board, but when did that start? How were the pre-particle board SLM SVT 810E?

JimmyM, JohnK, and all you Ampeggers, your inputs are highly valued!

Why are you using the SVT-VR with those cabinets?

For splitting the signal, I jump rather than split. Just go from one place to the next.

I voted Megoliath off that list because it fits *my* needs the best - but I'd actually take Mesa's PH810 if it were on there...

I posted a thread not too long ago about a comparison between an 810 and a 215. I felt the 215 is great for finger style and pick style, but gets too honky for slap/pop. Also, it didn't seem to bring out the clarity of the VR head as well as an 810.

Hope this answers your question.

Here's one more Ampeg for ya: SVT-808HE
Almost the height of a 610HLF, it's as deep as a 410HLF and is 600 watts at 4 ohms. Great low end and punchy.....but good luck finding one

I'm very curious to see these, but even more curious to try the good ol' sealed 810.

I have a good ol' sealed 810 from '98. It is actually an OSB model, the earliest I know of on TB. I replaced 4 drivers with Jensen Mod10-50's and it sounds raunchy (hard rock / punk / metal dream) with my GK 1001RB. It sounds typical Ampeg (with added upper mids courtesy of the Jensens) with my SVT-II. It's a nice balanced sound as it sits, but I can't comment on one with all stock drivers. I prefer my Genz Benz 610 + SVT-II for a cleaner sound though. The typical wooly Ampeg tone is from the cab, not the head! If you want clear, steer clear of the Ampeg sealed cabs. All of them I've used have sounded muffled and/or woofy compared to a nice ported cab with a horn.

Wow. Overwhelming advantage for the Berg (not surprisingly), but not a lot of love for the Ampeg matching cabs? That's quite a surprise!

Bergie by a mile. The NV215 is also a great cab with an SVT if you can find one.
