Solid State For The Doom

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,
Was hoping I could get some recommendations for some loud solid state heads that could bring the heavies. Any cab recommendations would be greatly appreciated, too.

Also, it would be cool if the heads you mention aren't unobtainium. I've been looking for Acoustic Control Corp. heads, but can't find thems anywhere.

Thanks for any insight.

Look for a used Aguilar AG500 or a Mesa Big Block 750 through a used SVT810. I'd bet the Acoustic 600 watt head would do fine with the right pedals (a used Way Huge Swollen Pickle would be a good place to start, but make sure you spend plenty of time tweaking it...it's a tricky bugger, but worth the trouble IMO).

The deal with Acoustic is: they existed as their own brand in the 70's and 80's, then went out of business. Guitar Center bought the rights to the name and "trade dress" (looks and basic functions) of Acoustic, and started having budget versions made in China. Another independent fellow decided to make a high-end version here in the US, but his legal wranglings with GC, and countless other hurdles, have kept his product from actually entering the market so far.

So look on Ebay and the TB classifieds if you want a vintage Acoustic, they do show up with some regularity. If you wanted the new made-in-the-USA high end ones, you'll have to wait a while longer--in fact, nobody knows how long.

Aside from that, there are lots of great options these days. A used Carvin B1500 will bring ultra heaviness for not much coin. If you want the sound of a beefy solid-state amp being driven quite hard, check out the Tronographic Rusty Box preamp--there's one in the TB classifieds--it was designed to emulate the hard-driven solid state amp used by Shellac. Run it into any decent power amp.

For cabs, there are a zillion options, but the general rule of thumb I'd use is: more speakers = more heavy. The more speaker surface area you have, the more doom you will be able to pump through them without ripping up the cones. A popular doom choice is two 8x10's.

Sunn, Peavey, Earth Sound Research, Acoustic. Anything from the 70's. Typically low wattage by today's standards, but usually quite a bit louder. Some of this stuff is harder to come by than others, but eBay or Craigslist should turn up some results.

As bongomania said, go for more speakers. Don't just depend on wattage to get volume. You'll move more air with more speakers, and since you're getting your volume from speaker area, you won't have to push the speakers as hard. Look for 70's 2x15's, or any sealed 6x10's or 8x10's. I'd say two large cabs (2 8x10's or 2 2x15's) and 400 watts (1 or 2 amps) and you'll be good. Or off to a good start depending on how loud you want to go.

Cool. Thanks for the responses, guys. Carvin has definitely peaked my interest, but I'll be sure to check out the ones you all have mentioned.

Check out the Carvin R1000. Usually cheap, and a real monster.

Carvin B1500 and a quad of 8Ω fEarful 15/6/1 cabs. The total load for the 8Ω cabs in parallel would be 2Ω, which the B1500 can handle.
