Here's a brand new approach to the current problem of giving up the amp you love in exchange for one of the new, lightweight models. www.ampreduction.com is a new company utilizing some new (and somewhat scary) technology which allows them to remove, in a molecular way, half of the cellular structure of the wood in your enclosure.
I know this sounds unlikely, but when you think of wood, whether it's solid wood or plywood, it is still a bundle of cellular structures. Each by itself is a fragile (and very small) thing; it is in their multiplicity that wood has its strength. So, given that half inch plywood makes an adequate enclosure, and your old favorite is probably ¾, it figures that reducing it to half, if possible, would be a great step toward making your carry-in, carry-out effort a joy rather than a chore.
If you've been with me on the math, you might be thinking that reducing the ¾ by half would be less than ½, and you're right. What happens is the space remains where the cell was, so you have essentially the same dimensions (slightly smaller, but nothing that would affect your speaker response) and the weight is reduced by half. Because the cells remain attached in this latticework, the strength is greater than the weight would indicate.
Exactly how this is done is not only beyond my imagination, but also well protected by these guys, but I have seen and hefted the results of their technological breakthrough (last night) and it is so incredible I promised them I would try to reach as many bassists as I can. Good ol' TB. Their web site has details about how to reach them. They also are planning to stock several standby guitar and bass amps already reduced, so you can send them yours and perhaps get an exact match by return freight. |

I sent my cab into them and when it came back, it was roughly 10 lbs lighter. Upon peeling back the carpeting, I saw that they actually replaced all of the wood with 1/8" plastic.
I'd say my cab definitely sounds better now, and the lighter weight is an incredible help.

April Fools Day is something that should be left behind after puberty. It's childish and simply not funny.
