Spare amp advice Part II

I own an Eden WT-500. It randomly gives me a problem, and I was thinking that it may be a good idea to have a spare...

I was originally going with the idea that I would get a "doughnut amp" (An amp not as capable as my main, but it could get me through a gig).

Thinking about it further, it seems a few more bucks would get me something as capable as my main amp.

I saw an Eden WT-800 for $600, and a Genz Benz 9.0 for $525.

I was thinking about getting another head and running both in mono to power each of my cabs. Meanwhile, I'd have a spare in case one of them crapped out.

On the other hand, I play in a band with a pretty beefy PA. If something were to happen to my amp, I guess I could easily go direct out from my Sansamp Bassdriver DI. Thus causing me to ponder if any spare amp is a waste of money.

Or should I stay with my original plan of a "doughnut amp"?

Your thoughts, observations or suggestions would be appreciated.

Get a GB 9.0 or GK mb800 as a spare. Small and ~4 lbs.

Which one do you favor? The GK or GB?

G-K MB Fusion or MB500, added to the MB800 suggestion.

You think it's too redundant?

Seems extravagant. If your main amp is so unreliable you need a spare on hand it's not worthy and should get fixed or retired.

If I was driving to gigs too far to nip home, an old power amp left in the car would be insurance. Half hour unscheduled break is no biggie for me. The only time my amp ever went down it was my fault so it's not like I'm rolling dice every gig.

That's what I'm thinking about extravagant...

Maybe pay like $200 for a used Carvin power amp, and run my Sansamp through it, if I have an issue.

My Eden has been rock solid forever. It had no issues my last gig on Saturday or the Sunday prior. Two weeks ago, I had an issue. I know it;s one of those things where it will work flawlesly at the amp shop.

Backup to me means anything that's cheap and works. That's going to mean used, likely big, and probably not light. If you want to spend a few bucks, nowdays, that could mean a 200 or 500 watt amp that fits in your pocket. Not dismissed to "backup duty", but a fine amp, totally capable of carrying your gig as good as your "main amp" does. GK, GB, whatever,....your choice of flavors there. Backup to me means craigslist, less then $200 by a good margin. I run an 800rb and a peavey T-max. One is backup to the other, I really like both, the GK is my favorite "main amp" right now, but I'm not the least bit disappointed playing either. And those are old-school heavy amps by todays standards.

Maybe this would work. Plenty of juice.

You mean the Carvin? Still extravagant for a backup when you have PA and BDDI. For the 175 you could almost get a MB200 on sale.

Well I already have owned the Sansamp for a while, and I thought the Carvin would be a low cost, versatile option

I would go with this.
If finances are not a problem, why not get another amp as your main amp and keep the Eden as a backup at home?
Going direct from the sansamp should get you through a gig, and will save you from setting up a second amp every time.

Another update. A guy offered me a Carvin B1500 for $400. It's in great shape. Should I grab it, or save my money for a Genz Benz?

+1000.

The MB Fusion is an absolutely killer amp and can be found for cheap used on TB. Highly recommended!

The GB would likely sound better than the Carvin, but that is just me. Many swear by Carvin and the B1500 is a good amp.

I like both the Shuttle 6.0 and GK MB800 I have. In some ways, the Shuttle is easier to dial in. Both are tiny, light, and cheap used. No brainer.

An fellow basser in FL has the GK Fusion with two 4x10 cabs. He was looking for the same thing - extra amp in case Fusion failed. Ended up getting another Fusion. Said that price-wise it was the best choice.

Well, my amp is acting up again. In any event, I really have to buy something.
I see a lot of the Genz Benz amps in the TB classifieds.

A lot of them are for sale from second owners. Should this worry me?

No. People sell stuff for a myriad of reasons, and GB has a very good quality track record.
