Speak Breakup?

I have a Carvin BX500. i got in it in the combo form with the two tens.

First question: I'm running the amp at 4 ohms. Is that the right setting?

Second: When in the louder volumes (even with low to no drive) the speakers start to kinda break up.


This isn't a problem right now, as I never really need to get that much volume, but in the future I may. Is this just the cab's problem? or does the just not have that much head room? Would a different cab solve this?

The 4 ohm setting is what you should use whenever the total ohm load of all speakers connected is 4 ohms or higher. Switch it to 2 ohms if you ever connect a total load between 2 and 4 ohms. The combo comes in 8 ohm and 4 ohm models, so you'll want to know which you got in case you ever add another cab to it.

Speaker breakup is bad for bass speakers. Any time you hear speakers breaking up, turn down the amp. Otherwise you're liable to tear the cones or overheat the coils.

To get louder, you'll need to add an extension cab.

+1 to all that. Volume requires sufficient speakers. You're at the limit, volume-wise, of what 2 10's can give you. Adding another (matching) 210 will significantly increase your volume.

Make sure you're not clipping the preamp as well, that could be the cause of the breakup.
