Speaker/amp/impedance question

Sign in to disble this ad
My current set up is a Carvin R1000 and RL410T. I just bought an older used Hartke 210TP for practice, but it is not very good. It’s rated at 100w, and my R100 is 225w per side @ 8 ohms. To get it loud enough to hear with drums, the speakers are farting pretty bad.

So I was thinking about taking two 10’s out of the RL410T for the time being, and putting them in the Hartke cab. This would be a 16 ohm cab then. The R1000 is rated at 700w at 8ohms bridged, or (225x2) what do you think the output would be at 16 ohms? Is this a bad idea?

Bad idea...................

A: Pretty sure the carvin is an 8 ohm cab, which means it has 8 ohm speakers loaded in it, wired in a combo of series/parallel. Two of them loaded into a 2X10 could be done as 16 ohms (series), or 4 ohms (parallel).

B: Just throwing speakers into a box (cab) because they are the right size is a crapshoot at best. Speakers need to be matched up to the box for proper cab size and tuning (porting).

C: EVEN if they work well in the new cab, and EVEN if you wire it to 4 ohms to get more power - you will quickly find that it will still not work well. Wattage does not matter - what counts is speaker surface area. There is only so much a 2X10 can do, no matter how much power you throw at it.

You need to take your 410 to practice. Or cover the drummer with blankets.
