speaker buzz

Sign in to disble this ad
hello,

the cabinet i am using has suddenly started to make a buzzing sound. the noise is like you have a small, hard object vibrating on the speaker.

i removed the front protective grill to see if there is any visible problem, nothing to see though.
when i place a finger firmly on the softer surrounding part that allows the membrane to move up and down, the buzz stops.

is the speaker finished or can anything be done about this?

thanks for any advise.

Can you see a visible rip or tear in the surround?

Sometimes it's hard to see but the glue seams where the cone meets the surround, also the one that holds the dustcap on can start to come apart.

If you find it you can put some extra glue on there and hold it together before it separates fully or tears anything.

or the glue beneath the cardboard ring (gasket) on the outside edge has come unglued from the frame. the surround is between that ring and the frame. it buzzes when loose.

just removed the speaker to check for any tears or glue problems, screened the thing with a pocket light, could not find any problem.

i put the speaker back in tomorrow and listen, maybe it's just craving attention......

i will report on teh proceedings, thanks to all who took the time.

I've had to move the wires to get them off the back of the cones on a few Fenders - not that they are bad or the worst - but it happened.

Taking the speaker out kinda makes it hard to diagnose 'cause it's stretching the wires when it's moved to take a look-see.

still buzzing

i have put the speaker back into the cabinet but the buzz us still there. allthough it is not very loud, the noise makes the bass sound slightly distorted.

is there anything you can suggest that i try?

thanks for your input

I agree make sure speaker cones don't have wires grazing them. Can make a very subtle buzz. This once had me replace a pair of drivers. During the change I saw the problem.

i have double checked the wires, they are not to blame.

i have found another 12" speaker at a friends house, i will put that one in and hear if it makes a difference.

Not to question your intelligence, but your cab is a bass guitar cab isnt it?

Yeah - I was gonna step into that too - but there are some 12-ers out there for basses and bass cab replacements I think.

Maybe not - but 12" is odd methinks.

i don't know if the cab is actually a specific bass cab, i bought it from a local instrument rental company 2 years ago.

it has the now buzzing 12" speaker and a tweeter. there is no brand or name on the cab. on the connector port plate on the rear it says MAH1-12, 300 watt/8 ohm that's all i have.

what is so unusual about a 12" speaker in a bass cab? what if the cab is not originally designed for bass? thanks again for your time.

Sounds like a bass/pa/keyboard speaker to me. It has a tweeter and the power rating suggests it is made for bass.

Are you sure it is a tweeter, not a port?

I Googled your MAH1-1 to help you pick out what you're talking about, and I got several items.

Would you like to see if your cabinet is one of them?

I kinda favor the last one.

it is a tweeter all right, it's tricky to measure but i think it is a 1,75" one.

surferjoe, cheers for googeling the model number for me, allthough several options are appealing, there is no direct match.......

Your speaker might not be the problem.

Plus, if it does turn out to be the speaker, we will need lots of information to offer you a suitable replacement.

Picture please
