Speaker/cab gurus ... HELP!

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, there is a long story behind this but, for now, I'll keep it simple. I have discovered that my Glockenklang Quattro cabinet has two hinky speakers. I took them out of the cab and, lo and behold, the glue holding the magnets to the speaker frames had come partially loose, putting the magnets out of alignment with the speaker frame and, hence, the diaphragm structure. There's a gap of up to an eighth of an inch at the top of the magnet.

My amp tech says the cab was probably dropped, which is possible because I had shipped it to a TBer in Nashville. He found that the two speakers were not working, and shipped it back to me (at my expense - no problem).

OK, so now I'm taking a bath, but I want to get the cab up and running rather than toss it in the rubbish heap. I plan to address all four speakers. So here are my options:

See if I can have the speakers rebuilt (all four).

Buy four new Volt replacement speakers. I don't know where I would get these, and I'll bet I'd end up a lot more upside-down than I already am.

Replace the speakers with comparable ones with similar Thiele-Small parameters (JBL, Eminence?).

If anybody's listening, here are the Volt PS10/175 Thiele-Small parameters.

Fs 48 Hz
Re 5.6 ohms
Qa 4.2
Qe 0.33
Qt 0.31
Vas 47 litres
Xmax 2 mm
Sd 315 cm2
Vd 63 cm3
Le 0.9 mH

Suggestions, anyone?

i'm sure that you have someone in your area that can repair the two drivers.. i'd suggest Allen Speaker, in Houston, Texas.. i would have no doubts that they could repair the drivers..

Or Orange County Speaker:
Speaker Repair Official Site - Parts & Service - Orange County Speaker

Consider reaching out to JohnK_10 here at TB. Good guy, knowledgeable, giving.
I'm sure others here will offer great suggestions. Good luck with it man. Bummer about the expense and hassle.

We have Orange County Speakers. They're pretty reputable.

If you're handy, you might just be able to re-glue the magnets as long as it hadn't been played enough to get scraped voice coils or other issues like the baskets being knocked out of round. If you don't want to attempt it, a reconer certainly could. Perhaps one of the real experts would chime in as far as proper adhesives to use, other problems to look for, etc.

It would be some work, but you could enter those driver parameters into WinISD, and then simply model all of the available Eminence drivers in the same box, looking for which one has a curve that's close to the original.

Really should have Mms or Cms too, and BL. 2mm Xmax, 63 cm3 Vd kinda says look for something with at least 4-5mm Xmax though.

But maybe Orange County has recone kits for these, or can get them.

Professional speaker repair can de-magnetize the magnet structure, recenter and repair the bonding, then re-magnetize. If the voice coil is not already damaged. This should be a claim against the shipping carrier from the get-go.

OCS doesn't list Volt as one of the brands they can work on, but they say they can fix just about any speaker. I want them to do all four so I don't have to worry about any latent damage that may exist. Their "standard" repair price for most speakers is around $65, which I think is pretty reasonable, so I may be able to get them all up and running for under $300. All the cones look fine, and hopefully they can just re-attach the magnets.

Yeah, that 2mm Xmax has me wondering, but the cab sounds great ... er, sounded great.

OK, update. That cab was dropped HARD! It turns out that the magnets aren't just glued to the frame, they are riveted. So where the magnet is separated from the frame, the rivet has tried to pull out and it has deformed the metal of the frame. That's why I was unable to push the magnet back into position. FUDGE!

You need to file claim against the shipper now. Pulling rivets loose means it fell off a loading dock or something equally as high like a box truck/tractor trailer, etc. This will also knock baskets out of round, induce voice coil rub, and damage plywood structure of the box as well.

File it as irrepairable damage/total loss.

That sucks, man.

Definitely sounds like a total loss to me. Not that those speakers are worth a crap anyway. 2mm xmax on a bass cab? Sadness.

Unfortunetly speaker baskets are not car fenders, once they are damaged they are scrap

Mms and Cms can be computed from the above parameters. But I agree with you about the Xmax.

True, but with only 2mm xmax these were junk before they even left the factory.

What about some Eminence Kappas or something? This is a fairly small-volume cab.
