Speaker frequency response

Sign in to disble this ad
I am trying to find out which manufacturers make an affordable combo or cab with a speaker frequency rated to handle 31 Hz. Even high end manufacturers like Mark Bass only rate most of their speakers at 40 Hz and up. Ive looked at Ampeg, GK, Hartke etc...
Then Ampeg mentioned a term called "usable frequency response" and that just confused me enough to reach out to anyone who has accurate info on these terms. How is one supposed to research this info when most do not even mention it in their specs and when they do! how is one supposed to know if the info is regarding actual or usable response. Pretty confusing to sift through.
If anyone has already been through this i would really appreciate it if you could just name some products that will handle my low B with active pickups. Thank you!!!

The human ear would have great difficulty hearing anything that low. What we hear as the low B fundemental is usually the harmonics of that note, so that's why bass cabs don't go that low. Besides, you'd need MASSIVE power to reproduce them at the same level as the rest of the range. IF you have massive power, look into Acme cabs, (I think they call them LowB?)- anyway, those are it, aside from a huge poweramp with crossovers and dedicated sub bins, you won't ever get down there. (futile). Good luck.

The low B fundamental is not necessary at all, any good cab will work.

So would most decently built 15" combos/cabs handle what we hear as the low B?

It's true that the low B is reproduced through its harmonics, but reproducing the 2nd and 3rd harmonic well is pretty important, which not all cabs will do. You might want to research the fEARful cabs a bit.

if you already checked Hartke, how did you miss the 30Hz XL series cabs? o.O

Those specs you see in ads are useless anyway, the better they look (lower they go), the more false they are. Cabs that have -3db in the 50's or 60hz, -10db in the 40's are a lot more honest. Some have true f3 in the 40's but they aren't many. Something with true response into the 50's sounds deep already and give a good low B, because they produce a good 62hz harmonic. Live concert subwoofers are passed higher than your 31hz and you know how deep they sound.

If you can make lots of 60Hz with your rig then the soundman won't want to have you in the front of house subs so you get less instead of more. If he's too dumb to realise the mushy horrible bass is the competing out of phase sounds of your rig and his then you get mushy horrible bass with the odd note booming out like crazy.

It's great fun to have it for little gigs, but not practical on big gigs with PA.
