Speaker mounting and some really horrible sound

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,
Just picked up a mesa 2x15 diesel cabinet (sight unseen unfortunately). Iv had one of these before and I just love the sound of it. Pretty awesome.

Except for this one.....

The top speaker is cool. Works just fine. the bottom one sounds pooey. No lows, all highs but it doesn't sound blown. I pulled off the cover and took a look at the speaker. Low and behold, its mounted incorrectly with drywall screws that aren't sitting flush against the speaker its self. Its just basically sitting on 4 or 5 screws.

I was wondering if this would cause speaker damage? The speaker is a Eminence Kappa 15. I am 100% sure that this is not the original speaker. It also looks pretty new, so im not sure if it needs to be replaced or just remounted....

Any advice would be helpful.

The first thing to do is to mount the driver properly and drywall screws just won't cut it. 10/32 hardware is pretty much the standard. You can use T-nuts on the inside or any other mounting hardware of your choice.

Cool, thanks.

Also, just noticed that electrical tape is all thats holding the wiring in place on the +/- terminals of the speaker.......maybe part of the problem..........

Could be. You should certainly do the battery test to check that the drivers are connected with the right polarity. I'd certainly check all of the wiring and correct anything that's amiss. If the Driver terminals are lugs you can use push on spade connectors or solder which would be my preference.

Yeah thats what I was going to do. I mean if the bottom one is wired up wrong then...... I'm just glad there isn't a crossover to screw up at this point.
