speaker or new amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
6 months ago I was asked to join a rock band that does a lot of newer stuff and some classic songs. I have played in bands for years as lead singer, lead guitar and keyboard. They asked me to replace their bass player who they fired. I have played some bass before but didn't have the equipment. I bought a nice Warwick Corvette proline from my brother who has 4 basses and decided to just use my keyboard amp which is a Peavey KB300 with 180 watts, a 15" woofer and a horn. It sounded pretty good with the Warwick but now has developed a buzz when I play. I took it in and the tech just told me everything was fine. I don't know whether to replace the speaker or if it's the horn making the noise and needs to be replaced. I have thought about just saving up and buying a new Acoustic B200H head and a B410 bottom. Any suggestions as to what route you would take?

Get a bass rig. Amp and cab. Make shure it has enough power for your needs.

Head and cab?

I should let you know that the band I am in, both guitar players use Line 6 combo amps. My Peavey KB300 has more than enough volume to keep up with them. They usually mike their amps while I don't and I still have enough volume. Does anyone have any experience with the Acoustic B200H and the B410 cab? That's the price range I would like to stay in. Does anyone recommend any other amp? I would really like a 4-10 cab with a head of at least 200 watts or more. Thanks for your input and helping the newbie!

I've tried the Acoustic B200 head and 4x10 cab in store at the local guitar center. they sound REALLY good, imo. probably about to commit bass sacrilege, but I actually prefer the way they sound over the Ampeg stuff in the store. although, I'm not a fan of Ampeg in general. too muffled, or something, for me. like, not enough mids...can't quite put my finger on it.

Stick a sock in the horn if it doesn't have an attenuator. If it makes the buzz go away, and the amp sounds good to you and is loud enough, then leave well enough alone! In the meantime, play as many rigs as you can for a while- use the time you're OK with your keyboard amp to really dial in what you want your bass rig to be.

It probably wouldn't be difficult to disconnect the horn, either, if you identify that as the problem.

Thanks for your help, I've never been a big fan of ampeg either. I will try the sock trick with the horn. Appreciate it!

If you are serious about the Acoustic, buy the B600H head instead. It's not terribly more money, but its a ton more power for the time when you'll need it. It sounds pretty good too.
