Speaker static

I have a problem with my rig. I am running a carvin b1500 into an avatar 1 x15 and 2x12. I'm getting an intermittent static/crackle into just the 2 x12. My first guess was a problem with the tweeter because when I turned the volume knob (attenuator?) it seemed to affect the noise. So I unplugged the wires on the tweeter. Noise still present intermittently. So I plugeed the tweeter back in and looked at all the other wires in the cab, nothing seems loose or out of place. The noise happens whether or not I have anything plugeed into the input of the amp. I also tried using a different speaker cable, a different output jack on the amp and all the input jacks on the cab. None of this got rid of the noise. Any suggestions?

If you run the amp only into the 1 15 is the noise there ?

It's not likely to be the speaker. It may be that the 2 12 is more sensitive or brighter and therefore the issue is more apparent with that cabinet, but also present with the other cabinet.

I don't believe that the noise is coming from the 15. Also, the noise seems to be affected by adjusting the attenuator on the 2 12. It doesn't ust get louder or softer, the noise will actaully start and stop as I fiddle with the knob. Also, not sure if this is pertinent, when I play there are no issues. I guess the bass is drowning out the static.

I think I've noticed noise when adjusting tweeter attenuators before, I wouldn't worry much about that, they're not something that should need frequent adjustment or any adjustment while playing. I suppose it's conceivable that the attentuator is bad but you tested it without the tweeter wired up at all.

Since the tweeter goes to higher frequencies than the other drivers, it's also possible the noise itself is in the range where only the tweeter is able to reproduce it. If you can test the amp through another cabinet which also has a tweeter with similar sensitivity to yours, that would help narrow it down.

If you don't get the noise through another cab with a tweeter, it would be interesting to bypass the attenuator but use the same tweeter, and if the noise is still present, then try a different tweeter, but by that point it may be easier to take it to a pro, unless you enjoy working on your gear.
