Speaker surgery?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently picked up an old, quirky Silvertone rig for cheap. It has a 200-watt solid-state head and a 2x15+2x12 cab. It sounds pretty decent, althoug there isn't much top end to speak of. Not terribly surprising given the era that the amp came from, but I digress...

ANYWAY, there is a fairly pronounced rattle coming from the bottom 15. Occasionally it will go away, but eventually I'll hit a low note and knock the rattle-causing piece loose again. It sounds like there is just a piece of debris floating around under the dust cap. Is there any way to remove the dust cap and fix the rattle?

Depends, are the dust caps metal or paper. Paper is "easy" or should say easier. Are you sure it's under the dust cap? Maybe remount all speakers 180 degrees, you may have suspension sag. As for no top end, the output device junctions are probably weak and need replacing.

The dust cabs are metal. They look similar to the old Peavey Black Widows.

Could you explain what you mean by suspension sag?

Old materials with the speaker unused for a long period the cone maybe actually off axis (voice coil will no longer be at 90 degrees to the magnet stucture). Turn the speakers and gravity will slowly correct the sag.

Hey Mr B, so the OP should maybe send the speaker down under for a while?

I first read the title of the thread as Speaker Sugary. I was looking for that sweet tone!

Hmmmmm Naw folks don't float down under "un-aided".

Course, he could just turn the cab up side down but the mounting hardware won't get cheched that way?

Are you sure that it's not the baffle board rattling? This is a common problem with older cabinets.
