Speaker surround repair...

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I have a speaker here for a cabinet that has a very small hole in the surround that I'd like to fix. I've since bought a replacement speaker for the cabinet but wouldn't mind repairing it if possible.

It looks to be about 1/8in in radius. Maybe the size of a screw driver shaft?? It doesn't affect the sound at all but I don't want it to get worse either.

Whats the easiest way to patch up this hole?

I've used silicon glue/adhesive caulk/gasket maker type stuff before with success. Stuff that sticks things together but stays a little rubbery/flexible, doesn't dry hard.

Little hole like that could probably just cover over. Longer tears I use a little piece of a rolling paper to cover it and smear silicone on both sides.

Are you talking about the silicon glue I can get at Lowes/Home Depot?

Yeah, adhesive caulk or the RTV silicone gasket stuff you use when fixing your car. Mine get regular play, they're still holding together.

FWIW, I used "RTV Black" I had left over from fixing my car. It worked well and it's already black. I think household silicone adhesive caulk has similair gluing but staying flexible properties. The RTV is also made to withstand high temperatures and petroleum products like you find in an engine, not a speaker.

Ok, have some RTV black on it.. I thought the piece was torn off but it was actually just folded back.. I was able to pop it back into place and the just seal it with the RTV on the front and back.

Thanks for the suggestion!!

I also used marine silicone about 5 years ago - on a Kappa Pro 12. Still play it out regularly.

You live next door to an Autozone or something? That took all of 36 minutes to "go get the stuff" and do the repair.
