Speakers for my BF Bassman

Sign in to disble this ad
I am using a small Briefcase now and I want to try my old '67 Bassman as I need more power but I'd need a new cab for it.

What would you suggest me?

1x15, 2x12, 2x15?

I was considering following speakers:

Altec 421A
JBL D140
Eminence Basslite

I play a fretless Jazzbass Deluxe in a fusion band (funk & jazz mainly) with keys, guitar, drums, sax, voice and me.

Maybe I am wrong and I should consider buying a modern amp like a EBS Neogorm 210?

Thanks for your suggestions.

if you're going for the matched head/cab look and a vintage sound, i'd get a dual showman cab for it and load it with two JBL k140's.

I've got a '69 Bassman (blackfaced), I had a '68 (blackface spec 'blackline'), those are great little bass amps. I played mine through an 8x10 (behringer paper speakers), 4x10 Eden XLT and 2x10 Eden 210T, I like it through any of those. I'd really like to try it through one of the new lightweight 2x12s that are all the rage. I don't see why you couldn't bring it with you to try out cabinets and speakers at any decent amp store. I've heard the GK Neo 2x12, maybe I'll take my own advice and bring my '69 in to try a GK 2x12.

Jensen makes some nice looking, highly sensitive 15" neo guitar drivers. that's how I'd roll I think with a low wattage tube head. That, or eminence deltas possibly.

One thing's for sure, if you plan on using it live with any volume to speak of, you'll need the most efficient cab you can find. I think a 1x15 in a proerly sized and ported cabinet would probably yield the best results. Maybe something like a 3015 or 2515 in a TL 606 type box. Over powering certainly won't be an issue except for the flimsiest of speakers.

I'd also go for the vintage look with black Tolex and matching grill cloth. You could also order an Avatar Neo 2x12 in that style. Might be a good sonic match as well.

a '67 bassman has a 4 ohm output tranny, so i'd recommend a 4 ohm 2x15 cab (as opposed to a single 15 cab). plus you'll get more output (2x) with more cone area.
