Hey, I'm picking up and Empty v4 cab for free from a buddy of mine. It's a sealed back and holds 4x12 speakers. My head is MID 70'S SVT. Can anyone suggests some really good bass speakers for this cab and where I might get them. And has anyone used this cab for bass. I believe it originally was designed for guitar, but I'm replacing the speakers so I'm curious if any has done the same using an SVT head.
Thanks |

Thanks | Read the FAQs. There's a lot more to cabinet design than just sticking drivers in a box. If it's a sealed cab driver choice is critical, and if it is a guitar cab chances are it won't work well on bass no matter what you load it with. |

whatever johnk says goes for ampegs as far as i'm concerned. here's his thread about using deltalites in a v4 cab.

| | | | I also have a V4 cab. Tried a variety of different speakers without much luck. I settled on some Eminence's and it is strictly used for guitar. Fabulous cab for that, especialy with my V2 head on top. I also have a bass 4x10 cab from the same era, I believe. Funny thing is, it is the same depth as the V4 and I found that it was not that great of a cab either for bass. I ended up selling the original speakers out of the 4x10 cab on ebay and wanted to try some neo's, and that did not help either. I just dont think these cabs were all that for bass as far as I am concerned, but did not extensively try speakers out. Someone here Im sure will point you in the right direction. Good luck. |

| | | | Hey Jimmy M,
What a great thread of Johnnyk 10. I just went back and read it. Wish I would have stumbled on this way back when I was experimenting. It must be the damn egg cartons in the 4x12 cab that I was missing. Also, I think he touched on the same 4x10 cab that I have. I believe it is the Ampeg B40. That is still sitting empty so I will have to get back to that some day. So, to the original poster of this, I would follow these steps and give it a whirl. |

I didn't really dig the original speakers either, ended up swapping them for some eminence speakers which was a big improvement. I haven't used it for quite some time since I got an 8x10 then an SVT (and got rid of my V4). I had a small gig a few weeks ago, kind of wished the 4x10 was four ohms so I could have used it with the SVT. I thought about wiring in a 2/8 switch like John did for his 4x12 cab, but I have an early SVT so the impedance isn't switchable like the newer ones.
As far as the egg crate foam, my B40 only came with foam lining the back, which surprised me for a sealed cab since I'd always heard a sealed cab should be stuffed (you should see the inside of my 8x10...). There was a replacement wire between two of the speakers when I got it, so I was thinking maybe it lost some foam along the way or something, but now that you say you didn't have any, and re-reading JohnK's description, maybe it came as is. I had been considering getting some foam to throw in there, but since I don't really use the cab anymore I never got around to doing it.

| | | Yeah, I definately will be getting back into that B40 again at some point. I am a believer in 12" bass speakers and also in the neo form. Also, getting everything to 4 ohms. I have two different bass heads that I use. A Hartke HA300 and an Ampeg SVT Micro and they both beg to be played through a 4 ohm cab. I've tried a lot of different configurations and thats where everything seems right.
To WINGS012345,
Here is a link that may help out as well along with JohnnyK 10, http://www.colomar.com/Shavano/4x12wiring.html
I think getting this cab to a 4 ohm load will help as well. Not sure where your head runs at. I know my V2 head is switchable between 2,4 and 8 ohms. The V2 is actually a guitar head, but at 4 ohms and used on top of most bass cabs that I've used it is pretty sweet. I am not that tech savvy and always enlisted some help from a local guitar guru on any projects. At this time I am done lugging this big stuff around. I play smaller venues and am always in search of the biggest sound out of a smaller box. Either that or take my ass back to the gym. |

| | | | Thanks for the info guys. I will let you know how it sounds. I own a 4/10 he ampeg cab and a 2X15 Peavey cab that I have been using. If this works out this is what I will stay with |

| | | | I use Eminence Basslite 2012's in my V4 Cab. I think it sounds fantastic. Fat low mids, has some serious low end roll-off (don't care), and the high mids and highs are good for me. Definately has the sealed cab sound, which I was going for. |

I ordered (4) 4 Ohm speakers, and wired them for a 4 Ohm load, you can get them in 8 Ohm also. The sealed box gets a really tight focused response with plenty of lows. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
