Quite enjoying the Presonus Studio Channel I have for my bass in my IEM rig. Compressor, para eq, and tube pre all in a 1RU strip. I am however excited about getting a Sansamp RPM in the next few weeks.

For the tone you are trying to achieve (from your other thread), probably the Alembic preamp. I would not think that a channel strip type pre would in any way get you where you want to go IMO. And the days of needing to lug around a 3 or 4 space rack rig are LONG over IMO.

How is it long over? Seems to me that the most logical approach to gear is being modular. That way, if I get tired of a certain sound, I can just change out the pre and not deal with the whole amp. I can even use multiple preamp pedals and switch between them depending on the song.

You can use multiple pedals with any amplification system, modular or not. My comment was based on the amazing performance of the small, all in one heads out there (which of course, all sound VERY different... some you would dig, some you would hate), versus hauling around a 4 space rack.

+1 though, high quality pedals are alive and well. There are MANY players who have found 'tube amp tone' nirvana by using a small, relatively neutral voiced head like the Markbass LMII/III with the amazing VT pedal in front of it.

Lots of ways to get to where you are going. Per my post in your other thread, for a relatively clean, fat, all tube tone, the Streamliner900 is a game changer. 8 pounds, very full and loud and uncompressed, and capable of (IMO) the illusive 'clean, true tube tone' at all volume levels.

Also, making a preamp not designed for bass work with an amp not designed/voiced for bass can be a bit more combersome than you think. Hi pass filtering, gain matching, etc. can be a bit complicated if you aren't really into that stuff.

IMO and many years of IME! That being said, the Alembic preamp (F2) and a nice lightweight high power PA amp with some control over hi pass filtering is a pretty darn good combination for that sort of 'Fender Bassman/Showman' type tone that doesn't distort at high volumes.
