Speakon vs 1/2" connectors

Sign in to disble this ad
My Bassman head has a Speakon connector as do both the 1x15 and 4x10 cabs. I could go Speakon to Speakon from head to 4x10 and then 1/4' to 1/4" from the 4x10 to the 1x15.

My question is - is there any advantage to the Speakon cables over a high quality 1/4" cable?

Speakon will never, accidentally, come unplugged. Other than that, I don't think there is any difference.

Speakons are insulated so you can't get zapped by a high-power amp and they don't create a momentary short-circuit when connected/dis-connected as do some 1/4" jacks/plugs. As mentioned above, they also lock into place. Speakon conns can also carry more than one signal (multiple pairs of whars) for bi-amped applicaitons, etc. There are 2, 4 and 8-pole speakons. Variants are now used for A/C power distribution as well.

yes a speakon connector has more surface area and therefore makes a better connection with less resistance and thus won't get hot at higher output levels like a 1/4 can. They also don't have the momentary short that I saw somebody else mention and they don't come loose when tripped over.

Take the time every once in a while to take your speakon connector apart every once and a while to check that the set screws are tight and that the wire isn't getting pulled loose.

Zooberwerx handcrafted Speakon cables give superior performance over-and-above commercially available models. Like other custom builders, there's a 5-10 year waiting period but I need your money now.
