SPECTOR PLAYERS - what rigs are you using?

Sign in to disble this ad
For the last few years I've been using a GK 800RB and Peavey VB-2 going into either a Trace Elliot 1524T (a more recent purchase) or a pair of Avatar SB112s. I'm satisfied with the tone and volume of both heads but I've been thinking of trimming the weight and bulk some and replacing them with a GK 700RB and MB500 which got me to wondering what other TB Spector players are using. Maybe I could benefit from a few different perspectives as to what heads (maybe cabs too although I dig what I have currently) to get next. So what rigs are y'all using?

One of my configs:

I use a Carvin BX1200 and one or two DNA 210's. The combination of those two allow a lot of the natural tone of the Spector come through. Sounds similar to what studio monitors do to my Spector tone, with some amp flavoring thrown in.

I have not found a rig that makes a Spector sound bad right off the bat. They are versatile basses for sure.

Newest: GB ShuttleMax 9.2 -> GB 212UB
Previous: Mesa M2000 -> GB 212UB
Eden WTX-260 -> GB 212UB -or- Eden D112XLT
Eden Metro alone, or with either GB 212UB or D112XLT

Sounds good through anything though. Very even, punchy, good depth.

Current: RH450 and RS210 or RS212, larger venues RH450 with stacked RS210 and RS212

Previous: Carvin BN610 2x10 and GK-115RBX

Rebop 4 and NS-2JA-R (used to have NS-2A and Rebop 5)

Excellent lows and low-mids - not muddy, very punchy and warm if need be. More so with RH450 and RS cabs than with Carvin and GK. Stage presence is a lot better with TC stuff. Drummer (sometime V-Drums direct to PA, sometimes Ludwig kit), 2 guitarists, keyboards, violin, 2 lead vocalists and 2 backups

Markbass Little Mark amp and Markbass 12" 400W cab. But to be honest the best sound my Spector ever delivered was when I plugged it into Ampeg tube combo amp. That pair IMO is just perfect.

I'm using a Peavey VB-2 into a SWR 12-stack 4x12 cab. It has so major balls and compliments the Spector growl perfectly.

..

I have a Spector Euro 4 and it sounds great through my Carvin BX1200 + two DB cabs (112LF + 1260). Before that I had a GK700Rb + a RBH115 + RBS210 stack. Sounded great also.
Both are a great match for the Spector’s wide range of tones.

I'm not going after your typical "Spector Sound": for example, my Euro Bolt-On 4, 5 fretted & fretless had their stock pups & electronics gutted for custom-wound Nordstrand Big Single pickups & Aguilar OBP-3SK/PP preamps to go along with their atypical Spector woods and bolt-on construction to get both the best "Spector" as well as "Jazz Bass" aspects they displayed.

That being said, I run out my pedalboard to either an SWR Mini Mo' or Interstellar Overdrive Preamp, into a QSC PLX1602 running Dual Mono into an Avatar 210 & 212 stack. That seems to be Pretty Darn Close to "My Sound", although I've be wanting to add a few more Avatars for more "mix 'n match" options... a 4x10" either to use alone to with the 2x10" for a 6x10", a single 1x12" for low-volume gig, miking purposes in my home or Professional Studios and to match up with a 2x10" for a nice "Micro Rig", etc...

I no longer endorse Spector, but I used them happily for years and years in my Metal band. I used a stereo rig as follows:

Spector NS-JH5 & Custom NS-HH5

>

Stereo Compressor to two Sansamp RBI's:

Sansamp RBI #1; Set slightly scooped with a little drive and lots of presence

Sansamp RBI #2; Set with lots of drive, bass and treble cut, Mids boosted around 300hz

Each RBI run to one side of a Crest LT-2000 power amp, and then each of the two signals to one side of an SVT810e to give two totally separate signals. Every once in a while I would use tow separate 810's, one for each signal. This way I could get that deep, scooped out overdriven tone, but have enough fuzzy midrange to still punch thru in a mix.

I'll go ahead and post the first um... "entry level" Spector of the thread.

Used to be SansAmp RBI and DBX-133 into QSC RMX1450 into some Avatars.
Now it's a Carvin BX1500 into a 1212/6/1 fEARful. Still use the RBI sometimes, but not often.

Not my rig, but the last Spector i saw used was through a Hartke HA3500 or HA5500 and a Harkte DyDrive 810, sounded awesome.
