Sporadic crackling coming from my guitar combo, help!

Sign in to disble this ad
hello! i use 3 amps, 2 bass and one guitar amp. The guitar amp is a marshall 2x12 combo, i only put treble through it so i get the high end i need and have had no problems...until last night. Whilst i was playing i started hearing this really harsh loud crackling, what could that be? I wasn't constant but you could really notice it when it happened, really hrash sounding.
Also, when i tap the top of the combo it happens then topo which suggests to me that it's not a blown speaker.
Anyone any ideas?
ta!

If tapping on the cabinet causes your problem to occur, you have a bad connection inside the amplifier. I suggest taking the amp to a tech.

What you are trying to say with the rest of the sentence I have no idea.

hahahahah, ok that makes sense and has calmed me down a bit (i'm skint and the thought of having to buy a new amp scares me...muchly).
Would a loose connection be obvious to spot if i had a look inside?
What i was trying to say is that i thought i may have blown a speaker becasue i have no idea what that would sound like.
cheers for the info!

I am having a similar problem to yours except that I tend to get no sound at all or a very low volume sound with crackling. Tapping the chassis seems to make it either go away or come back, depending upon wether it was there to begin with or not. I doubt you could just see a bad connection in your amp. You'd have to use a multi meter to find the bad spot, but that is tech work.

Most likely not. If you have electronics experience you'll have to track the problem down. If not it's tech time and poking around inside could lead to a more expensive repair bill.

thanks for the suggestions guys! a friend of mine had a listen last night, he reckons it's either a loose connection or even a piece of solder that has come loose and is bouncing around inside. tech next week!
