well guys i've been playing for about 2 years now... mostly small gigs with some other local bands...i'm thinking about stepping it up a bit...i was wondering aside from effects pedals and what not, what should i have to get the best sound out of my rack?? I have a 6 space rack and so far all i have in it is a GK RB 1001 MK II and it's pushing an ampeg 4x10 and a 1x15..sounds great, but what else should i be filling this rack space up with??

got an amp, got cabs...that's all you need. if you don't have a specific reason for buying something, don't bother.

Are you not happy with the sound you get from the GK head?

The short answer is yes, you can run a pre ahead of your GK, or even better you can run it into the GK's power amp input. Do you feel that the GK isn't giving you something you want? Have you tried EQ'ing it differently? Have you tried gigging it with the EQ flat? Because sometimes too much EQ'ing can actually hurt your sound on stage, even though it may sound killer in your practice room. The longer (and better) question is why do you want a new pre-amp? I say ditch the rack, just schlep the GK and your cabs. I mean, what is missing from your setup in terms of jamming with your band?

I'm with Jimmy. Just because you've got empty rack spaces, doesn't mean you need to fill them. A good amp and speakers are all that's required. If you're unhappy with your tone, maybe you bought the wrong amp. And "defining your tone" is purely a matter of technique. A good player can get their sound through almost any rig.

All good advices, more isn't always better. But if you really feel the urge to fill it up, I suppose you could start with a tuner and a compressor. Leaving a few spaces open help with airflow and keeping your amp cool too.

to be honnest with you, i am moving right now, and use 2 pedal boards (one because it has some old dod pedals on it and takes a different power supply) that are packed away, so i just plugged sttrait into the amp through my cabs and i realized that the sound is awesome, sometimes to many things in the signal chain just take away what you bought the amp for in the first place, if it aint broke dont fix it lol, have fun
