Studio Rig?

Sign in to disble this ad
Long time, no post. Okay, the thread title is somewhat misleading. For the first time in my bass playing career, I have a bass that is exactly the tone I hear in my head. When I run it through a Countryman DI into the board and use in-ear monitors, the tone is perfect. When I'm practicing at home into a Tascam or Boss headphone amp, the tone is perfect.

Sooooo, what rigs (head/cab) give the studio monitor reference/"exactly the tone of your bass" kind of tone? Clearly I'm dumbing this whole thing down, and there are lot's of elements, but use your imaginations.

I've heard the Berg IP's are like that, but with what preamp? Any head/cab combos that can achieve the "flat" tone?

Thanks in advance!

My Eden rig sounds just like when I put my bass through the U5 into ProTools.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I know the Avalons have historically been touted as a standard for studio clarity. Now I have to decide if I'm willing to go back to the pre/power amp situation.

I dunno - the UA and even the Avalon (at least the 737) are meant to "color" the sound. If you want something "clean" perhaps try the Martech MS110 or a Massenburg pre - AEA makes one that is relatively inexpensive for their ribbon mics w/o phantom power that is a little cheaper. it's supposed to be super clean.

I have to mention this, only because I've been on a hunt for one - I've used a myriad of studio pre's for bass and have owned a few (ok, NOTHING like Johnk ) and my favorite was a Joe Meek VC1Q. It was my 1st pre, I sold it to make way for Avalons. it sucked for everything but bass - it was magical on that!

I personally prefer "colored" pre's - I'm big on Chandler Limited. w/ the 500 series craze you should be able to mix and match some cool stuff. . .

I am also always looking to reproduce the tone of my bass as close to possible and I have yet to find something in the bass amp world , I found out that there is a lot of choice in the PA world. They are always designed to be as flat as possible as the bass amps are usually designed for mostly lows/low mids.

The preamp of your choice into an active PA box of your choice.

I use RCF ART series. They are light/powerfull/sound very good. Pricier than others but they are worth it.
