If I buy a small 300 Watt cabinet (1x12in) do i need a 300 watt amp head? or could I get a 400 or 600 watt one? Would i blow out the speaker? |

And a strange noise from a 50w amp could do damage as well. I believe there is something like "underpowering", where too weak a signal doesn't move the cone enough to cool the spool, and causes damage. But I'm not sure about the latter. You may use a 2000w amp on a 50w speaker, you'd have to listen for distortion. After a couple of minutes the speaker runs hot and distorts while it didn't the first minute. |

you can use any amp you want with any cab you want as long as you keep the volume down below the cab's fartout point. but it makes zero sense to me to throttle a 112 with a 500w amp.

| | | | Sorry for that "underpowering" fairy tale. Told to me once, in extreme example of an 1800w subwoofer and a 30w amp with volume knob far down. RickenBoogie very wise, watch the impedance. |

| | | | thanks a bunch guys. especially for the sticky guides. I am planning to get an Epifani UL 1x12 cabinet which is 300 watt at 8 ohms. Could I use a Markbass Little mark III 500 watt amp with an output of: 300W RMS @ 8 ohm, 500W RMS @ 4 ohm? |

Perfect (although the 300W rating of the cabinet is essentially meaningless -- you'll still need to use your ears and turn down if/when it starts to misbehave).
