Suggested reading for beginners?

Sign in to disble this ad
Can anyone suggest some books for beginner bass can designers? I have the newest loudspeaker cookbook but it's a little to much for me I think. I've been reading the stuff on parts express forum. I'd like something else in addition to that. Something that might put things in "dummy terms"

I have learned a ton on this site. I think I'm the most common newbie poster and I'm afraid to wear out my welcome haha

+1 to posting away. This site is here for exactly that.

Have you read through all of the threads in the FAQ? And the subsequent threads/links/etc in those? I know it's not exactly easy reading, but there is a lot of info.

There are a TON of DIY links in the FAQ's. Also builds by other TB'ers. Read'em and weep.

I don't know how the app works on your iphone, on my droid it sucks. I always just go to the internet and get here that way, then you can use the whole site as if you were on a regular computer.

Another link for you. BillFitzmaurice.info - View forum - Educational Links

It's the educational links section of Bill Fitzmaurices site. It's not bass cab or ported cab specific. A lot of his stuff is used in PA, hifi, etc. but sound is sound, it works the same way.

Another thing I might suggest before sinking money in a cab that may or may not come out that great is to build a test box. You can do this cheaply, doesn't have to be pretty or finished. Mine is an old 115 I did before I learned very much about this stuff. It's about 4-1/2 cubic feet, big enough to do singles of most any driver we're going to use. I made different cutouts to screw over the baffle to mount different size drivers. Use various lengths of pvc pipe to achieve different tunings and throw more or less blocks of styrofoam or wood blocks of known size inside to shrink or expand the box.

Use a speaker with known parameters and it will help you to hear what you're seeing on the charts. It's a big help in "translating" what you're reading to what you're hearing. After some time, you can look at a chart and pretty well imagine what something is going to sound like without actually hearing it and be pretty close. It's not perfect, it won't show you things like distortion or how a driver sounds when crossing the threshold into non-linearity without having that particular driver in it but it will demonstrate what different sizes and tunings do to the response. The interior box dimensions can get a little wacky if you have to shrink it a lot, keep it as close to a box shape inside as you can to better simulate smaller boxes but you can at least hear what you're seeing and better understand what's going on.

It'll take a long time to work through all the linked material there.
