Suggestions on Light Weight Cabs

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm revamping my setup. I started with a Tech 21 Deluxe Driver and a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0. So far I love it, great tone and lightweight, and that's how I want to keep it. So, I'm looking into new cabs as well. I'm thinking a 2x12 and a 1x15. I want the cabs to be light, loud, and keep the tone that I've achieved so far. Any suggestions? I'm trying keep it under $1000 for both, but can extend it to $1500.
Thanks for your replies.

Hmmm, tell us about your tone a little more?

I think you can get out of a 1 cab solution around 50-60lbs - no need for two cabs here.

I strongly recommend the Bergantino AE212 with the Shuttle 9.0. I don't see why you'd need another cab. I played an outdoor gig with that rig, and there were no deficiencies. It weighs 55 lbs, and it'll take up most of your budget.

I love my Berg AE's, and they are definitely "top of the heap" cabs, for sure. However, at very close to the same level of performance, but at a lower price point (and lower weight), you should also check out the GK Neo series cabs. The 12" cabs (Neo112-II and Neo212-II) are especially impressive, though the Neo115 is pretty nice as well (I just don't have as much time in on one).

Since you're already a Genz Benz fan the NEOX-212T is also worth consideration.

I'll throw into the ring that there are a number of guys making ~60lb fEarful 1212/6's out there now. Those things are ridiculously good...if the style of music suits it.

I'd set one against two AE212's with 900 watts on tap

Art of Noise also has a composite one available for ~1500 that should come in under 50lbs.

Sound

I've used an Acoustic 361 stack for a while. I love the tone even though its solid state. I just like a classic thumpy but yet warm and full sound out of my rig. I'm aiming for a little more power and a lot smaller. That's where the GB Shuttle and the SansAmp came in.

I'm a big Orange Isobaric cabs fan. They are a bit pricey though.

I have the Shuttle 6.0 docked on the 12T and bought the Shuttle 210 to go with it. They stack perfectly and I'm very happy with it. 37 pounds on one arm with the combo, 32 pounds on the other.

If you are after a big, deep, round, warm, old school tube tone that can take some serious snarl without sounding harsh, those cabs just cannot be beat.

If you're into paying 500 bucks for orange tolex, those cabs cannot be beat.

LOL! That, too. But I tell ya, hearing these cabs being driven by an AD200 really won me over. And yes, I did compare them to a variety of other cabs (man of which I would prefer over the SP cabs in most scenarios).

But I suppose I should reiterate the IME/IMHO, YMMV mantra.

So Tom, you're impressed with the isobaric Orange cabs? I love how they're such a small footprint for a 2x12" etc...
Do you think the, say Orange Iso-2x12", compares favourably to other more regularly designed 2x12"s.
I'm definitely not in the market for one, but love the idea & size etc...
Aaaah, now I see your latest reply....

Think of the 2x12 as a 1x12 with the power handling of a 2x12 and low end extension of a cabinet that's about 30% larger -- for twice the price.

I am very impressed with them in the context of a moderately grindy to full-on buzz, all-tube onslaught. They sound better in this application than almost any other cab I have tried, and I'm including some 8x10's in the comparison (the 2x12/2x10 stack does not move as much air as an 8x10, but they move plenty, and the tone is frackin' awesome).

That being said, for a more modern tone, a more versatile tone, more clarity, more brightness, more overall SPL per cubic foot, I would definitely go for something else, like a Berg AE, GK Neo, fEARful, Thunderchild, etc.

My love for the Orange isobaric cabs is all in the context of what I consider to be "the Orange tube bass tone," and in that light, I think that they are exceptional performers. But they are not going to fare well in many other applications.

IME/IMHO, YMMV.

All the new Gallien Krueger MB series ultralight combos and cabinets are the best sounding lightweight speaker enclosures I have ever used. They make a 410 that's only 40 pounds...
