Sunn 2000s or Sunn Model T

Basically my father and i decided to go and build a new rig for me.
It's going to consist of a Fearful 1515/66 and one of the heads i mentioned in the thread title. I found schematics of those heads on the net, since here in holland they can't seem to be found and we figured it would be much cheaper to make one ourselves then having it shipped from the usa or some other country.
Now of the 2000s i know it's a great amp for bass that takes pedals really well, but is relatively clean. I always hear great story's about the model T and it seems to be the holy grail of doom tone. But when i see some vids of it being used, it's always used for guitar. So i was just wondering how good the model t is for bass.

I don't think either of those is a great match for the Fearful cab, the high excursion woofers in a fearful are more for handling vast solidstate power, and a cab designed for high efficiency would be more suited. Those amps won't have the sort of sub lows you'd be expecting from a Fearful cab as they just don't have the raw power. I'd look at something more akin to the Barefaced Vintage, or another kappalite loaded 2x15, which you could research and make your own one of, it would work out a fair bit cheaper than a Fearful due to not having the midrange and crossover components, and it will act more like a vintage cab, rolling off frequencies that those amps were not expected to produce through the cabs they came with.

Ok, thank you for the information. I'm going to look into some other 2x15's then. I was thinking about upgrading the amp i'm going to build with more powerfull tubes. Still wondering if anybody has any first hand experience with the model t however.

I'd try building a kit.

There are loads of Marshall and Hiwatt kits over there in europe, but finding the transformers especially to build a Sunn, i'm not so sure.

And especially if it is your first time building an amplifier.... it can be a pain to spec' out the parts.

I'd do a Kit.

A nice Hiwatt DR201 kit would do the trick.

I used a model T years back through an old sunn bottom with 2 15" jbl d140's. Great sounding amp with good power. It had a nice clean fat tube sound. It also sounded great for guitar and i had to loan it out alot to some guitar player friends. Wished i had never sold it.

Most of the doomers I associate with tend to avoid the Model T on bass.

I'm not sure why, just an observation. If they're rocking Sunn gear, its probably going to be 2000S.

Last Model T I heard live was being played through with a Baritone guitar. He was also running a micro synth with every slider dimed, and a rat. With everything on it sounded like he was splitting the earth. I kid you not. It was rumbling so much that it was scary.

Actually it was a local Colorado Springs band called Enemyswim that opened up for High on Fire when they rolled through. They put on a pretty good show, but their vocals need some work.

Standing right in front of that Model T on full tilt set to kill and destroy goodness was a pretty holy experience though.

I can offer you to try your head - once you have built it - with my 15/6. I live in Germany. It all depends on the sound you're trying to get. Fearful cabs work fine with tube heads and still get loud. I have tried mine with with a 50 Watt tube guitar amp and it sounded sweet.

Old Sunn Model T's (the old version) are great for bass. I used to gig with a Model T and Eden cab and it was great. I seem to recall I installed KT90's instead of 6550's and the headroom was better. I think better 6550s are available now so I would probably stay with them. Nice grind and punch.

This is becoming a hard choice. I guess i'll try a hiwatt kit first and later when i have more experience, i'm going to try and build an upgraded sunn model t clone. Does anyone know where i could buy such a kit though?
