Sunn 2x15

Sign in to disble this ad
I got a line on a sunn 2x15 cab ported at the bottom. Can you guys shed some light on how I can tell the difference between a real sunn cab and the fender-sunn cabs I've read about and what the performance and sound difference may be.

The other option is a clean Peavey 2x15 200watts @ 4ohms

The sunn is supposed to be 8 ohms and like 200-300 watts...the guy wasn't that together, but besides the sketchy seller...whatcha all think of the cabs...

Probably Ampeg or Marshall tube head into it...for bass....

Thanks for all your input on all my (previous) questions, it's really helped me step up to a better rig than I had planned on!!!

If it's a slot port at the bottom it is a Fender/Sunn.

Doomloop,

There's a guy on Talkbass who had one of those Fender/Sunn bottom slot ported 2x15 cabs. He said it was not a good design (the cab is apparently not tuned properly). He said it has weak lows and too much in the high mids. He said the new Fender 215 Pro cab is 1000 times better and has thunderous lows and works great with a 300 watt all-tube head.

So if I have a fender/Sunn is it like playing a squier or epiphone? Or will the doom guys still like my cab even though they think I'm too pretty(no beard)....

i have the sunn/fender cab and it pushes a lot of air, don't be fooled, i mate it with a ashdown 4x10 and it is very good, and i am picky. i have swapped out a lot of gear looking for " that tone", and this cab stays in each new set up.

Why do you care what other people think of your clean shaven appearance or your choice in bass cabs?

As a doom guy, I don't think either is relevant.

If it sounds good, and is loud, it is good.

As for the Sunn bass cab, I had thought about getting one like that, since they come up for sale now and then, but it wouldn't match my other cab. I may get one anyway eventually.

No really these guys once tried to set their merch table up right on top of me...it was classic....anyway.

Thanks for the info...I'm gonna go with the fender/sunn cab....too good of a deal!
Found an SVT-classic w/8x10 also but I guess I'll need a second amp or slave to drive both cabs....

Thanks again...talkbass is the best place ever...

No, I'm talking about impedance. The OP I think said that this model of cab is 8 ohms, and my 2x15 is 4 ohms. So a no go.

Probably so. Or just have two separate rigs and join another band, keep one at each rehearsal spot.

Two bands is the problem I'm having now...funny you should mention it.

SVT classic>fender/sunn2x15
>peavey8x10 or ampeg 4x10
>2x12 cab

I'm in a couple bands and just tote my head. But an SVT weighs about twice as much as it does, and moving that often would not be fun.

I used to run an svt4pro but sold it a while back and am now seriously into the 'tube transition'. Not looking forward to the weight, just the tone!

Not all tube amps are as heavy as the SVT.

Mine isn't. Of course, it's also 120 watts less, but whatever.

Selenium 15PW5-SLF 15" in an old sunn 2x15 cab

How about this cab, considering it's fender and from that other thread possibly tuned higher and lacking lows, in comparison to a newer Peavey 2x15....
