Sunn Beta Lead for bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I wanted to know if the Sunn Beta Lead would be a better choice than my current heads. I've got a Peavey 50/50 tube power amp being worked on, and I also have a QSC GX3 power amp which i use to power an Avatar 2x12. I'm also borrowing my guitarists Swr 400 head and 4x10 cab, which sounds okay, but its not my cup of tea. In my other band which is a cover band, our guitarist has an extra Sunn beta lead that he will let me use, and I've played it before at lower settings and it sounds great on its own out of the avatar. Im wondering if anyone here has used it in a live setting and had the volume up on these bad boys, cuz from what ive read the power amp in these guys are the same as the beta bass, just the preamp is for guitar. Any opinions? thoughts?

Your right on the Pre amp.

I don't think 100 transistor watts would cut it for you, but it might.

IMHO i'd sell it to a Kurt Kobain wanna be and get a Coliseum 300, or use it to run Grit/mud/whatever with finniky FX.

If i can find a good deal on a Coliseum ill prolly take it... once i get some funds. What i would really like to do is buy my dad's friend's Sunn 190L and 6x10 cab. But i don't think he will ever part with it.

i have a sunn beta lead with matching 212 cab. its well used, and needs a cleaning. i have played bass thru it semi successfully a few times, and sounds great. But after about fifteen min of playing (not even close to max vol. just enough to be heard with guit an drums) it powers off and wont turn on. The first time this happened i thought, i killed it. but i waited an hour and plugged a guitar in, turned it on and it was good as new.

a few months later i tried the bass again and same thing. with a guitar, it will play as loud and sound great, with a bass it will play loud and sound great, then i guess it gets tired and needs a nap.
