Ive been looking at getting a Sunn Concert Bass head, today at a local used music store I saw a Sunn Concert Lead head for $395. I know normally youre not supposed to play a bass thru a guitar amp but looking at that head, it looks exactly like the concert bass head, it just has second channel with reverb. Is there any other difference between the bass and lead head? I guess Im asking if the 2 amps are similar enough that I can get a Concert Lead head instead of a Concert bass head and safely play a bass with it.

Care to share?

I had a CB head many years ago. It was okay, nothing particularly special. Kinda heavy for what you you got out of it power-wise, but all of those old solid state amps were like that.

just off this series of videoes...the guy is using a MIM Fender P-bass sounds pretty good, he just doesn't mess with too much of the features and stuff throughout the videos, as in the distortion and reverb.

I going to go play it tomorrow after class and if everything works, I'm gonna buy it Friday, offer the shop $350 for it...so wish me luck!!!!

I didnt buy it yet, but its listed as $395, Ill see if I can get it for somewhere in the $300-$350 area, which is about how much Id pay thru ebay, unfortunatley Sunn stuff is kinda overpriced right now

At one point John Entwistle used a Coliseum Lead for his high frequencies.

Not a great picture, but - Coliseum Lead is amp at bottom right.

IMHO $400 is too much for a Concert lead.

A Coliseum is one thing, but a Concert? I'd pass.

The difference between the Concert Lead/Bass is the pre-amp.

When playing with a full band I actually defeat the pre and plug straight into the back "power amp in" jack. It gives my CB way more clean power and reduces a lot of the extra noise.

Dixie Dave from Weedeater is one bassist who uses a Concert Lead.

Why?

Why do you want/need this so bad? These amps do look retro & cool, but as far as *actual performance*, they're just not that special.

And $350 is too much, in my opinion... unless they're considered collector's items or something.

I had one of these back in the mid-'90s. The reverb channel was dead, so only the clean worked. Sounded pretty decent with bass, better than some of the solid state stuff I had at the time. Seemed to have enough power with the bass cab I had at the time to keep up with a medium drummer. I ended up selling it to a bass player in a friend's band pretty cheap.

Now - I think it would be noisy compared to my Trace amps and perhaps a little muddy. Still a cool old piece of gear but $395 seems a lot overpriced.

Good luck!

Everyone is knocking the price but these things are going through the roof.

If you can afford it and you like it, then buy it. Just don't expect to get your money back when you sell it. Unless you find someone else like yourself.

Good luck.

I had a Concert Lead head as a backup in the mid 80's. I actually had to use it for a while and never had any problems playing bass through it. I was lucky enough to pick it up for $75.00! I still have it.

Cheers,
Jim

Chris Squire also used one of those in the '70s.
