SUNN Scepter.. how much would you pay?

Sign in to disble this ad
HALP?!

What is the $$$ value of a clean and working Sunn Scepter amp?
I have a deal in the works but really can't afford to overpay right now.
I know this is relative but what ballpark should I be realistically be hitting for here?

Thank you very much!

The going rate seems to be around $3-400 for one in good-great condition as far as I can see from a quick intarweb search, more if it includes the cab. I don't think I'd pay much more than that, if I was willing to pay that much at all. They are a bit of a rare bird, not as common as some of the others, but still.

I looked around online but couldn't find much in the way of fair market value. Thanks for your input!

Ebay completed listings is your best bet for recent sales on this kind of thing. There are two listed currently, one sold for $250, the other for $275 but one of those was missing power tubes and the other missing the power transformer.

This one has been recapped and retubed. But I am still thinking his price is too steep now.

crap.

I know this guy and don't want him to think I am trying to lowball him, but I want the amp as well. I may just pay his price and eat it, hoping they increase in value if I have to sell it down the line.

Neither of those amps are a good barometer for market value, as neither is functional. Both are (were) “pigs in a poke”, broken with no guarantees or returns offered.

The $275 amp doesn’t even have a power transformer, who knows what else you would run into getting it back to gigging condition?

And the $250 amp is missing its power tubes. As above... that may just be the tip of the iceberg.

The last nice Sceptre I saw on eBay went for $480, and the tremolo was non functional on that one.
Over the last few years I’ve seen “healthy” Sceptres as high as $650 and as low as $375, but the $375 was a while ago.
They are kind of rare, but the Sunn 100S (w/reverb & trem), the Sentura II, and the Solarus are essentially the same amp, Sunn changed the name based on the speaker configuration they came with.

Yeah that was kind of my point in pointing out their flaws.

The prices I found were mostly private sale listings on various forums and ranged from $125 for a head to $650 with a cab. The only one I've seen in person was selling for $600 with a cab at a shop just outside of Boston.

Links:
$100 in 1999
125 head/600 stack in 2005
final asking price of $525 - not a clear sale price - 2009
$355 with issues in 2005
$300 for a head a december of 2010

His asking price is for the head only, shipped, on a functioning and tuned up amp.. and is less than the highest price you quoted. So if I factor in that it won't need a $100.00+ trip to the tech. this deal seems about right to me now.

Sunns have been pretty cyclical over the last several years, more up and down than most vintage gear but like almost anything that is no longer manufactured gradually edging upwards for about a decade. I think eBay is the only real barometer; you can still occasionally “steal” something from a private party, and conversely you will sometimes see ridiculously high asking prices, but an open auction where you can view actual sale prices is probably the only true measure of market value.
I don’t imagine you can really get hurt, it’s more likely a function of how long you hang on to it.

Here’s one of those “right place, right time” stories involving a Sceptre, just to make people really hate me…

I have a Sceptre that I bought in ’03, from a private party. From the (print) ad I only knew it was a “Sunn guitar amp”, but the asking price was so low I figured it was worth the couple hour drive into the country to check it out, I figured
I could bargain it down, dump it and maybe make a couple of shekels if it was some trashed SS combo or something.

I got lucky, real lucky; the original owner had passed on and his widow was clearing out his toys. The Sceptre was under a sheet in the “music room”, a totally minty 1970 that he had bought new for a C&W band that never materialized 30+ years ago, with the factory footswitch of course. She said he only played it a few times, and that it only left the house maybe twice since he brought it home in 1970.
It certainly looked like the truth;

Chassis still all shiny, no oxidation, just some finger prints and dust, no dings in the tolex or snags in the grill cloth. The kicker was the piece of wood over the power tranny, which was put there at the factory to keep it from shifting during shipping.

When I got it home, the original USA Tung Sol 6550’s and the Mullard and Amperex novals all tested “new”. It’s not important what I paid, but suffice to say after making a short offer which she accepted, I felt so bad that I turned around, drove a half hour back and gave her the rest of the asking price to ease my conscience.
It wasn’t a desperation sale or anything; she was just selling off stuff in preparation to sell the farm. I just didn’t want to lose sleep over it...

Anyway, I’ve recently turned down offers over $1000, so I’m confident there is a market for nice old Sceptres.

No, there are a 12AX7, 12AU7, and 6AN8 that you can't see in that pic, I took that picture when I had he preamp tubes pulled for testing. That particular Sceptre is SS rectified though, so there is no GZ34 tube

I love me some farm fresh Sunn gear. One day I was driving in the country and slowed down to gaze at a yard sale sign. I spotted a Sunn 4X12 cab in the yard and drove in. The guy wanted 50 or 60 bucks and it was FARM FRESH clean !!
I was driving a small car and couldn't have gotten it the car anyway. Days passed and finally I couldn't stand it anymore and jumped in my truck and drove straight there and knocked on the door. Owner yells come in , I do and ask if the cab is still there. He says yea open the garage door it's right there.
I said how much? he says I wanted 50 or 60 bucks for it. I say how about $30 he says 40 I say $35 and we shake. Sweet!
My Sunn B200 amp head which is basically a Scepter W/ no frills, I got it off of CL a couple of years ago for $175 and the seller was adamant that he was taking no less than $175. I gladly gave him the money and said that it really was going to a good home.
After about $60 worth of service my tube tech Shad @ Quinn Amps said he and one of his buddies thought that it was one of the sweetest sounding Sunn's they had ever played through. (w/guitars) I have gigged it (w/bass) and it sounds great but of course at 50-60 watts it's not going to get real loud. It does however have excellent tone.

cheers
