SVT-410HLF Torn Spider

Sign in to disble this ad
A few years ago I had purchased a used Ampeg rig consisting of a SVT-3Pro head and a 410HLF cab.

Anyway, about a year ago, a friend of mine came over to demo the amp and noticed a distinct fizzy-buzz that was *very* noticeable at lower volumes, and wouldn't go away no matter how I EQ'd the amp, or what bass I had plugged in. So, I spent a couple of evenings servicing at the amp - I swapped out tubes, rebiased it, and even inspected the cab to see if I could make the noise go away. Nothing seemed to work - but after trying out a couple of other cabinets with the head, it seemed to indicate that the buzz was coming from the cab - not the head. I took another look in the 410, but couldn't see any obvious damage to the speakers, and all of the connections inside were nice and tight.

Anywho, "Real Life" (tm) kicked in, and I forgot about the amp until this week. Just for fun, I thought I'd take another look at the cab. This time I noticed that the buzz was definitely coming from one speaker - and under closer observation, that speaker has a tear where the cone meets the spider - about half-way around the cone.

I've looked around the board and someone suggested using brush-on super glue to repair this kind of tear. Does that sound like a passable long-term fix, or am I looking at replacing the speaker?

The spider? Or the surround? A detached surround can be re-glued with Aileen's. It might work on the spider too.

It's the spider, right at the part that's attached to the whole voice coil assembly. The tear runs concentric around that.

You can try a gel superglue, but long term a recone is probably in order.

Welp, I tried the gel-based superglue and let it sit for a while before testing it out again. Unfortunately, I think the damage is done, and I'm looking at at least a recone. From what I hear, OEM Ampeg drivers are pretty reasonable, so I'll probably just end up going down that road...

Thanks for the help, though!
