SVT-6 PRO Question...

Sign in to disble this ad
I run a SVT-6 PRO as my main amp. I have no complaints about it. But I have noticed that there aren't too many people out there using them and they seem to have been dicontinued rather quickly. So I was wondering if there is something that I should be concerned about? Are they prone to problems? Any insight would be great!

not prone to problems that i know of...just didn't sell all that well. but really, it was never given a chance because it was put out right around the time that loud moved ampeg to china, and i think it just got lost in the shuffle.

Thank you. Its been a concern of mine just because of the low numbers of sales and people willing to say they own one. Even Ampeg Customer Service wouldn't give me a straight answer... made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I have one and absolutely love it. It's been rock solid for me and sounds great.

One of the reasons I believe that it didn't take off well is the 4 parametric eq channels... it's a bit hard to get it dialed in to get a great sound out of it, but once you do, it's pure ampeg goodness.

I can see how the eq can be intimidating, but it think it is more versatile than a 6 band graphic eq... You are absolutly right, once the amp is dialed in, just sounds amazing!!! What cabs are you running with yours?

SVT-810E. Pure Rock'n'Roll!

I even bought the SVT-6 PRO twice because my first one got stolen.

I agree, the 810E with this head is a great match. I'm running the same thing and I've added an old Peavey 215 Cab that was loaded with Vegas instead of BW. I really think that the 215 balances the 810 and helps fill the room with my sound instead of lazer beamming it to the back of the room.

I know I would do the same if my SVT-6 was stolen. It's just that great of a head

I used to gig a 6Pro, and it is, imo, the best of all Ampegs Pro line amps, way better sounding than the more popular 4Pro, and simple controls to boot. Have no fear, you own Ampegs best hybrid amp.

Sure. It's true, they came out right at the very end of the SLM era, and were greatly overshadowed by both the 4 Pro, (for it's biampability) and the 3Pro, (for it's price), but for my money, the 6Pro had it all. Now of course, the trend is lighter weight class D power, so the newer 7Pro gets the press, but none of them soud as good or authorative as the mighty 6Pro. Also, if you've got enough speakers to handle it, turning the input gain WAY up, and the "tube voltage" control all the way DOWN, you can get some sweet sounding, though very loud, overdrive too.

Is there much difference in tone between the 6 Pro and the 4 Pro?

The 4PRO is a regular hybrid, tubes in pre, SS power amp.

The 6PRO is an expanded 3PRO...... 2 power amps in bridge for lots of power, and tube pre with some extras past the 3 PRO.

The 3PRO and 6PRO power amps are tube gain, with mosfets acting as a "transformer" between the tubes and the speaker. The mosfets provide only current, they provide NO "gain".

So, yes, there is a difference in character between the 6PRO and 4PRO.

I didn't know that. That explains a lot about how the gain control really shapes the "presences" of the sound on the 6PRO. Thank you for that. I had been recently wondering why the gain seems different.
