SVT-CL vs. 70's Original

Sign in to disble this ad
After 30 odd years of playing I'm finally going to buy myself an all tube SVT. I deserve it! We only live once right?

By far the best amp I've ever played by the way.

I'm looking for info on how the Skunkworks, the Vintage Reissue, and the Classic compare to one of the originals. Sound wise, build quality, point to point wiring, reliability, etc etc...?

I've played a CL through an Ampeg 410HLF and loved the sound I got. Can anyone recommend any lighter weight cabs that get the same or a similar tone?

I know, I know!! I'm going to buy an 85 pound head so why should I care about a 76 pound cab right?!! But I do.
Humour me will you?

Many Thanks.

I have one of these heads and the CL is designed to run through the 810E and for small gigs the 410HLF is fine. IMO a Fender215 PRO is real easy to move and can take the load(also costs as much as the 810E). Today I just got a Gator head caddy which should help but I agree moving it around without help is tough. Best of luck.....

none of the SVT's were ever point to point. they all use PCB's. the vintage SVT's do have hand-wired output tube sockets though.

of the new ones, i personally prefer the VR since it sounds the closest to a vintage SVT. (mine sounds exactly like my '69).

as far as reliability goes, my VR has never given me a problem since i bought it new in 2007. IMO, the vintage ones '69-'83 have always been well made and reliable amps.

if you can get a vintage, rock it. they are beautiful amps and my personal svt of choice. the vr is also great. the cl, imho, is only ever so slightly less great, but still a fantastic amp, and you can get deals on them that are better than most vr's and vintage heads.

and don't overlook the svt 2 and svt 2 pro, which are the same heads in rackmount form. the svt 2 isn't made anymore, but is more like the vintage svt's. the 2 pro is basically a cl in rackmount form + a graphic eq. not quite as stylish but has the sound.
