Which SVT has the most "drive" or "grind"

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm speaking of that rock type of grind, or drive, if you know what I mean.

My options are:

SVT 2 Pro
SVT CL
SVT VR

SVT 2 Pro
SVT CL
SVT VR

I currently have the VR which is a no frills Monster with a super loud fan. Its not for everybody. No gain or EQ and I have it running from my closet. All that aside, with the right treatment, you can get the grind that say KISS has . I am playing a SvT-4pro through (2) 810E's, gain on half as well as the master vol. in stereo. For what its worth, I had an
Svt2 pro brand new and it just didn't give me any vol., so I sent it back and got the VR, beware of ampegs inconsistant quality. I had a CL as a B-stock and I sent it back(loud fan, sounded abused) but maybe that would give you the sound you're grinding for......

I like my CL over the "vintage" SVTs I've owned for the more "modern" tone I perceive it gives, and to me that includes "grind". But, since I've owned my StingRay, "grind" hasn't been a problem no matter what I'm plugging into.

I hate to do this, but I get that exact same tone from my Orange AD200B when I crank the gain and cut the treble.

If you are set on Ampeg, though, I would go for the SVT-CL or the 2PRO because I'm going to assume that the preamps will clip similarly in most tube amps. I believe the VR has no gain control so to get that sound you would be LOUD.

IMO go with the 2pro. I think you can get a lot more "growl" & grittiness out of this one w/ the drive AND gain controls. just my humble opinion though.

yeah thats just the sound of speakers being pushed hard, I would go for the head with the most versatile tone.

no, actually, that's more the sound of the power tubes overdriving. not that there's many venues where you can turn an svt up that loud...

to me the Pearl Jam sounds like real Tube amp overdrive but the kiss one sounds like a distortion pedal, or at least you can get that tone easily from a cheap pedal rather than have to push a big tube head to insane volumes

Wouldn't the SVT-Classic be more useful in the sense that it has a master and gain control. So you could get the tube drive without needing high volume?

Where as the Vintage Reissue doesn't have both and volume is the only way to get that pushed tube tone?

svt's have seriously hot preamps, no need for a booster.
